Jaren Holmes appreciation thread

I see people all over the “give me Lipsey over Hunter” angle - which I won’t disagree with - but can we talk about how good Holmes was tonight?

He is quiet about it - as announcers rightfully pointed out tonight several times - but I think his contributions this year have been under appreciated. Or at least not talked about enough.

Not flashy, but he’s absolutely been getting it done. His last bucket and then taking charge on the other end was very well the mail in the coffin tonight.

21 points on 13 shots, 3 boards, 2 assists, 1 steal, no TO. Took at least one charge and no fouls.

In a super intense game he had his head screwed on straight the entire time.
Agreed. I think our experience and age are huge reasons for our success, and Holmes, Gabe and Grill are all that. Poise and confidence has rubbed off on Lipsey, too. It's gonna be a fun ride all the way through March. This team has that "it" factor.

he just kinda always somehow slowly ends up in the lane and confuses defenders... then that perfected floater drops.

Unlike a lot of players he gets into the lane under control. Sometimes takes it straight up. Might spin and fade away. Might up-and-under somebody. Might let a double come and then kick it out. It’s really fundamentally sound.

It's either 21 on 19, or 16 on 13. Can't include the FT makes and not the FT attempts. Pet peeve.
Okay. Would you feel better if I said 21 points on 13 FG? Or “shots from the floor”?

Jesus man. We just beat a top 10 team that was super personal for a lot of our team and the fan base and this is your contribution to the thread?

How miserable must you be?

I'm not miserable at all. I'm in a good mood. Like I said, it's a pet peeve when people make that reference incorrectly.

And you still have it wrong. LOL.

So if I would have said field goals instead of shots you would have not been triggered?

HIGHLY recommend listening to him on the post game radio (you can get it through cyclones.com and the varsity app---they both have the audio replays)---he was really fun to listen to and pretty funny.

Was just coming here to post this. He described Hilton as “surreal” and an NBA playoff game atmosphere.

And he said something like "there were a lot of things going on" early int the game. I'll have to go back and listen because it was really funny.

It's always fun for me to hear from the players once they truly feel Hilton. And honestly that's probably why there is so much hate towards Hunter. There are so many of us that spend a lot of money and a lot of time for years to try and make that place special. And even though it's irrational and stupid, it is personal when someone makes a big show of leaving. I didn't boo him or yell it him, but the passion that people have about it is what makes Hilton special.

If you guys have the Varsity app you can go back and listen to the locker room show and Heft interview Holmes. It was a great interview and worth a listen.

Holmes made an "Ashley Joens" shot tonight. Took the ball into the lane right up to two players, pivoted, then pivoted back, and went right between them for a lay-up.

He could hardly find the words to describe Hilton tonight! It was great.

Total slump buster. When we're in a drought, he's the guy who will get into the lane and get a bucket. Does not have to depend on the 3 point shot to score. And he is big and thick, yet quick enough to guard 1 through 4. Just an awesome addition.
