He has been….Alex Golesh
Driving back from the 2017 bowl win in Memphis we stopped in Champaign to pick up the kids at my brother’s house. Stopped at a fast food place on the way out of town and an Illinois asst coach saw our ISU gear and stopped to talk to us. He raved about Golesh, who Campbell had hired from Illinois. It just struck me how emphatic the guy was about Golesh being a stud up-and-coming coach. CMC probably should have promoted him to OC when Manning left for the Colts. But Campbell and Manning go back to Mt Union so he kept his spot open in case Manning wanted to come back. Mistake.

“Cool story bro” I know but it was foreshadowing.

Campbell does and should have a LONG leash here. No rational fan is calling for him to be fired. If you are, your memory is WAY too short about ISU football. But it’s perfectly okay to call him out for offensive and special teams ineptness and what is seemingly an unwillingness to change.

If you aren’t concerned about us getting outcoached by almost every other P5 staff over the last two years, you are a blatant homer.
There are some who are over the top in their criticism of CMC given the unprecedented success the last 5 years, but I think it is fair to question the nepotism with Manning and Myers. It didn’t work for Chizik, it isn’t working for Ferentz and it’s starting to fail CMC. Loyalty is great but sometimes you have to break the status quo to get new ideas and inject some energy into your environment.

If we lose to West Virginny this saturday there is the distinct possiblity that WE COULD NOT WIN A CONF GAME THIS YEAR!!

The last time that happened in my memory was Jimmy Dean Walden's last year where they FIRED HIM MID SEASON!!

2003. 2014.

This is so dumb. Maybe not to his dream destination because of all the expectations etc. but stop playing with fire here in your thought process.

Campbell looked to be different than the coaches before but looking like that’s not the case. The other coaches never had the benefit of a fluke pandemic season.
He better than most coaches we've had but he's not nearly as good as some in our fan base think. We are just a few players away though. It's not like we are getting beat by 30-40 points. But we'll never be anything without a consistently good O-Line. We need a few transfers.

Well if we go winless in conference we can hang our hat on not getting blown out. I’m sure that will go over great with recruits.

All it takes is an 8 win season and people will forget this year happened. I still like Dekkers upside. The kid is only a sophomore. Brock was still making freshman mistakes his sr year.

This thread is an embarrassment to the fanbase and that's really saying something. Get a grip guys.

I think the overall premise of this thread makes sense.

I think after this year and, maybe moreso last year, his stock at the types of schools that would be an upgrade from here has definitely fallen. They might look at a year like this year and go "well, theyre iowa state, they have to rebuild every so often, he just needs more consistent talent like we'd have", but last year might be more damaging to his upward stock in that they go "when he did have the talent, they only went 7-6"

Does that mean we should fire him at the end of the season? Absolutely not. Anyone who says so needs to get their head examined. But I'd guess this will be a much quieter season for schools calling up Campbell.

Does he leave this year if the money is right? You only have so many chances to.cash in.

Yeah, that's a decent question. If that offer comes it could be the smart move to take that if its unclear success will come. Wouldnt be the first one to do that.

His current contract runs through 2028 though, so it'd have to be a big step up annually assuming most places make their initial hire like a 5 year deal. If i'm doing my math right, Campbell would have about 25 mil left on his current contract after this year.

He'd probably have to be given an offer from a top 10-salary school to make it worth appreciably more to make the jump, unless someone was willing to throw out a longer initial deal.

Lol. Where would he go?

Probably a lot of places. Campbell is only 42 years old. He has accomplished a lot. This is a bump. But Campbell didn’t suddenly become a terrible coach. He is a winner.

The last 4 previous Iowa State football coaches had winless Big 12 Conference seasons. And none were fired after those winless conference seasons.

I expect Campbell to stay. And win again.

Good luck selling Campbell to any school that considers itself a serious football school. You think Nebraska can seriously bring in a coach who just went 0-9 in the B12? Come on.

It amazes me how some do mental cheetah flips to say how one pandemic season shows the status of the program. A little consistency in either 2019 or 2021 would have been welcomed. However, the reality is that 2020 is 2000 all over again. 9-3 and thus far the ceiling after has been 7 wins as it was after 2000.

CMC can turn it all around, he can make some hard decisive decisions and make fundamental changes to completely redesign the offense. The 2019 and 2021 seasons are indicative of sticking to the same scheme, the same plays and the same design in the offense. We had the most talented QB/RB combination in team history playing together from 2019-2021. Two of those three seasons we managed 7 wins. I suppose that's good enough for most Cyclone fans. Honestly it was good enough for me despite how annoying some of those squeaker wins against UNI were and constantly losing to Iowa by trying to beat them at their own game.

This season has shown beyond any shadow of a doubt that the limitations of the offensive scheme are hindering this team from simply winning games. Now that we have removed any use of tight ends our offense is reduced to about 5 plays that fit on a 3x5 card. Once or twice a game we roll out the QB to great success or try a flare route. This team is 0-5 in conference play and it is not following another coaching staff committing long term mistakes. You can have the best defense in the league but when your offense struggles to score two touchdowns in a game you are simply not winning in this league.

I want to see CMC succeed. I want to see that hungry coach from 2017 who said and believed only bull**** programs care about going 6-6. An innovator that has the mindset to defeat any team no matter the name on their jersey. 2017 and 2018 were remarkable seasons and the team seemed to embrace that mindset.

If you want to think that Norte Dame in 2019 was just too big, too physical and too tough and defeat was inevitable then that is exactly what you will get. Maybe that is all some of you want and that's perfectly fine. CMC made me believe he wanted to compete for conference championships and the results of 17-18 showed that fire. 2019 was a half-step back because that is when we noticed repeated special teams errors and the one-dimensional, non-adjusting in game offenses. The immense talent of the players (which I credit CMC and staff for recruiting) covered a lot of these scheme/game management issues.

Now we will see what happens because either way I believe CMC has years here even if he goes 0-fer in the conference for next three years. He can continue with his approach and make no changes and probably wouldn't even be on the hot seat especially with conference realignment rearing its head again. This is a crossroads though and only he can decide to change the approach or continue.

We mocked Iowa for their offense, their nepotism/cronyism and their coach being untouchable. Perhaps that is why no one can see those same qualities about our own team when they couldn't be more obvious.

I want Campbell to stay. Campbell has accomplished things at Iowa State that no other coach has. Our record this season is more typical of Iowa State football history
