Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Maybe I'm odd ... I like not having to interact with a cashier.
I'm a big fan of self check-out.
I do self checkout just so the idiot kids don't put cans on top of my grapes. I worked at Hyvee as a teenager and that crap never would have been okay. I don't think they even get training anymore.

Hell my HyVee barely hires high school age kids anymore. It's pretty sad.

When I was working in retail type jobs 10-15 years ago, the training I got was just following someone around who told me what to do. First real job was at the Q Center in food services; training was just following someone to watch. In College, I worked at Menards and Lowes. Menards was same as before. Lowes actually had a computer training that I had to complete before going on to the floor. But after that, it was just following someone around.

So do retail companies really train their employees anymore? Just seems like they hire someone and send them straight to the floor.

I like self checkout. Otherwise I have to pretend I’m deaf when I go through the regular checkout. Yes, I feel bad when I do it and am probably a bad person, but it gets me out of human interaction.
You really should go Fareway online. Just pop open the tailgate. They might ask if you are Jeremy when they bring out your stuff if there is more than one car in the pickup spots but that would be all that is required.

I'm not sure I'm into talking to cashiers, but put me on the payroll if I have to scan and bag my own ****.

People pull a check for doing that and you want me to do it myself?
Idk. They do it in shifts of 4-8 hours. You do it once per week for like maybe 5 minutes.

I took my two-year-old son with me to Hy Vee last night to get this weeks groceries. He was buckled into the cart, but somehow got himself out three times. Once he got out, he ran around grabbing stuff off of shelves while I chased after him while abandoning my cart. I ended up holding him while checking out. While using only one arm and loading the conveyor with the other arm, he proceeded to pull a bunch of candy bars off the shelf. I was exhausted after that because I had to pick up a bunch of candy bars while holding a squirmy toddler.

Next week, I'm doing going back to doing online grocery pickup with Fareway. I tried to do in-store shopping for a few weeks so I could use re-usable bags, but it wasn't worth it.

Then pay me. Or go full Amazon and don't have cashiers at all.

In California cashiers are part of a union. They strike.

If there is a place in dying need of self check out, it's Menards. Waiting to pay for a box of screws, behind a contractor with 14 rebate checks and half a dozen materials that must be scanned from the book, is almost enough to make me go to Home Depot.

This is where Target shines, they instruct you to leave your windows up and just show the code. Limited products though.

Just bring the iPad with you next time, let him zone out for a few minutes while you shop in peace!

At our local Home Depot they have a guy guarding the screw-nuts-bolts aisle. He said they have something like $80k in losses every year just from that area.

It's worth it for management to put an employee there to help stop the theft. Crazy.

Try ALDI. They know how to do checkout.

Have you been to an Aldi before? Each one I've been to has 4 or 5 lanes, 1 will be open. And 15 people in line.

Sure they move fast, but their checkout is what keeps me from going there more often.

I'm not sure how it works from a loss/prevention standpoint, but I absolutely LOVE the Sams thing. Scan as you put the items in the cart, and walk out of the store like a boss. Admittedly I have not tried HyVee's thing.

Scan and go is so amazing. All stores need to adopt it.

Don't get your hopes high. The owners are too scared that they're going to loose money by people not scanning certain items.

I had a buddy at work who previously worked at Menards (got fired because he was looking for another job and they found out). Anyway, one of the things he told me was that if you worked at Menards, you were not allowed to build your own home, because the owners feared that their employees would steal from the store. So technically, you had to buy an already existing home.

As much as their building materials selection is great, in addition to their yard, working for that company sounds just horrible based on my buddy. It got to the point I would try and avoid it if I could.

I'm really hoping that the Amazon technology quickly takes off. Don't even need to scan, just put it in your cart and your done! I think there are some other companies outside of Amazon that are developing this technology as well.
