Matt Campbell postgame quote

Some of this is proactive, he knows it's going to be a long year and is trying to switch the focus on the fans rather than the team. In a few weeks, any criticism of the team will be attacked by fans proving they aren't in this strawman group of bad fans cmc just created.

Next step is jp sending out a letter comparing fans to hawk fans if they are unhappy with the program.

I don’t recall anyone frying Gilbert. If anything we said he shouldn’t be kicking for a chance at OT after 2 unfortunate doinks.
That’s how I remember last week too…the fans around here put far more blame on the coaches than Gilbert.

This thread needs shut down, total non-issue as far as I'm concerned. You guys finally got something that's not coach-speak from him that you've been clamoring for years and now everyone is upset.

Let's revisit preseason expectations, pretty much everybody on here thought 6-6 or 7-5, now we are right on track for that and its a nuclear meltdown mode.

I'm not going to pretend like there aren't offensive issues but we didn't have trouble scoring or moving the ball on Iowa or Baylor and Iowa's defense is better than anything in the Big 12. We should have putup 21-27 range on them if not for all the dumb mistakes.

I thought last night we were actually moving the ball well against a good defense but they kept stalling out once they got close to the red zone.

If you guys think our offense sucks so bad or Manning is the worst Division 1 coordinator go watch Iowa and Brian Ferentz, their offense is on a completely different level of ineptitude .
If you’re watching our games, and also seeing the other Big 12 schools and think we are on track for 7-5, I don’t know what to tell you. This season can still be turned around, but if they continue playing this way they will win 1 more tops.

My perspective. Matt Campbell is arguably our best coach ever. He has the right values for a D1 head coach. He cares deeply about his kids. He gets very defensive when he perceives that individual players are being “attacked.” I did not see anybody attacking the kid, just pointing out the fact that in a 3 point loss he missed 3 very makable field goals. Give the kid a lot of credit - he stepped up big time this week. I think that says a lot about the kids character. I read nothing more into Campbells comment other than he does not like criticism of individual players. Maybe an overreaction to some extent / but mostly a good trait. He backs his players, and I suspect they greatly appreciate that. None of us know what gets said in practice.
I am grateful to see someone say arguably best coach. We have a ways to see how he plays out hopefully but I am old enough to have seen Johnny Majors turn our program around when I was a child and despite great success elsewhere, frequently return to Ames. Earle Bruce also had enough success to move onto the Ohio State job.

Ask yourself how many times in Iowa State losses under Campbell it's been because the defense wasn't good enough vs. the offense not being good enough
I'm not going to throw the defense under the bus because it's been really good, but if we are talking facts here they did get shredded last year by very pedestrian West Virginia and Tech, 2 of the easiest games on the schedule last year.

I saw maybe 2 people on here blame the kicker, most were either saying "you play the odds and take the kicks and we just had some cyclone luck" or "cmc needs to read the room and realize after 2 doinks we need to go on 4th to get the kid closer or keep the drive going." If it's the NFL I am roasting the kicker but it's not and I think by and large outside of a few drunk morons we didnt.

Ok, we'll see what happens. Is the offense good? No, alot of that has to do with not having a back like Breece or Montgoemry anymore, but I don't think it's been that bad.

Even going back to the Iowa game, I dont think we've had alot of trouble moving the ball, but we are definitely stalling out once they get close to the red zone and are settling for field goals when we need a TD. I don't know what you do to fix it though.

I was mad last night and woke up this morning realizing I had reacted to a quote I read online, but had not seen/heard myself for full context. So I watched the video. Here is the relevant clip with a couple of quotes that people seized on last night.

When that "winners do lose, but losers hide" quote hit Twitter last night, a of people (including me) seized on that as some kind of defiance or denial on Campbell's part, and watching the video I no longer think that. He was just repeating what he told the team, in classic Campbell-speak. Now as a fan, I think that stuff starts to ring hollow after awhile when the same issues crop up game after game after game, but I also understand there's probably nothing he's going to say in a postgame presser that's going to satisfy people.

His comment attacking the fan base, however, is just as bad as it read in print. He was actually talking about the positives of last night and then pivots to "our fan base, unfortunately, tried to fry an 18 year old kicker last week" as if the fan base was the central adversity this kid overcame and not his own misfires from the previous game or the crappy situations his coaches put him in in the first place.

It sounds like Gilbert did get a little targeted abuse, which should not happen. But I wish Campbell had been more specific in calling that behavior out instead of tarring the entire fan base with this. I hope he clarifies that in coming days.

I want to know how stupid a fan can be to not understand he was calling out those fans that gave Gilbert crap. So ******* sensitive.

It was a dumb thing to say, but no one should think he meant all fans.

The fans aren't confined to people who post on here and who you (or I) follow on twitter.

Again, that's two games you can name over multiple seasons. The offense has cost the team that many in October of 2022 and it's the 9th.

I will say the fans frying the iowa state kicker need to firstly grow up. Secondly look to this offense. Not all our points should come from the kicker.

Why even have a FG kicker on the roster then if it’s just some side effect of the total offense and not an integral part of an offense? Sometimes football comes down to kicking FG’s. Miss easy ones, get roasted. Coaches and kickers need to deal with it. There’s a bunch of different ways to win a football game, making FG’s is one of those ways.

I felt bad for Gilbert missing those field goals last week. I was not happy with the offense/OC play calling. Happy Gilbert made his kicks yesterday, but again coaching/OC was frustrating once again. Good defense, but bad offense. The comment by Campbell was not good I didn’t do that to the kid. Your OC is a problem actually has been for more than just this season imo yet no change.

I understand it’s not ‘confined’ to people who post here…buts it’s still a pretty broad brush to paint with.

I don’t mind that he came after the fans- especially considering he is privy to a lot more of the facts than we are. CMC knows the specific details regarding what Gilbert went through last week. If we knew what was done and said, I think we’d be a little upset about it too- so I don’t blame CMC for taking a swipe at fans, but he could’ve narrowed the scope a bit.

Personally, I think CMC should focus his energy on winning football games and not going after fans for the stupidity of a few.

Maybe our receivers not named X should actually step up and try to make a play then. I don't remember who it was but somebody dropped a 3rd down conversion on that last drive that stalled over by the ISU sideline.
If I recall correctly, that pass was dropped by X…hit him right in the numbers as he was falling out of bounds.

Good morning folks! Just wanted to say this morning that I've calmed down a bit from last night, and I'm not drunk anymore (which helps).... and so I wanted to retract a few things I may have said that I didn't really mean.

I don't want CMC gone, but I'm not sure that I ever said I did last night anyway.... and I also realize that nothing is going to happen to Manning mid season either and it doesn't make sense to fire him mid season.

With that being said.... I do think what CMC said was stupid, but he was ticked off too, and if he could take it back I'd bet he would say that 'some of' fanbase fried our kicker instead of the entire fanbase. I'll give him that. But it's never a good idea to mess with your fanbase coach.... that's going to get you nowhere.

As for Manning... if things don't improve offensively the rest of this season, I don't think CMC is going to have a choice but make a change... and that should include Jeff Myers on the OL too IMO if things don't improve.

I'm just really tired and exhausted with watching our offense become so boring and non creative in any way. No misdirection, no jet sweeps, have no idea how to run a screen, no downfield throws at all, etc, etc. Downfield throws have almost no risk. Usually will either go incomplete, caught, or get PI.... rarely intercepted. And it loosens up the defense a bunch. We are so flippin' conservative it isn't funny. Iowa is a LOT more creative compared to us.... that's saying something.

He's cracking a bit. This year it's the young team excuses. Last couple years with experience it was failure to execute in the margins. Winning fixes everything. Unfortunately for Campbell the fix won't be easy or soon. He should shut his mouth about the fanbase (regardless of % being dicks) ...as it's a lose lose outcome. Pollard has the fanbase right where he $needs$ them. Campbell can either help his boss, or make his bosses job harder. With the loss and that comment you just made your bosses job harder.

Would love for CMC to sit back and think what the fanbase at Ohio State or Michigan would be doing if a kicker missed 3 field goals in a game like that KU game. And then followed it up with a game like this only allowing 10pts and losing. Oooooof. Hope he realizes he has it pretty good here

People are calling for CMC to blame players and coaches. He won’t and shouldn’t. It will lose any chance of improvement if he does. I hope he is addressing those issues with the individual appropriately, but pointing fingers in public is wrong and something he won’t do. Firing an assistant now won’t help most likely.
Good point and perspective. And I think it is in just about the right spot of this thread.

I am certainly willing to let this year play out. We can then probably only hope that Campbell makes some changes with the offensive strategy and coaches.

There's nothing dumb about defending your kicker from egregious behavior of a select few, if he did in fact get the targeted type of harassment someone else described earlier in the thread.

But Campbell said "our fan base," not "a segment of the fan base" or "a small number of fans." I hope it's just a poor word choice. But regardless, it's not even just about being sensitive, it's that it's a deflection from the real problem at hand.

I don’t think he will ever get rid of Manning. I guess we will find out. His comment last night should not have been made which shows he needs to grow. What he does with Manning will also show how much he has grown or not.
