Dish Dropped Disney Last Niight

ESPN thinks they are above everything, let me tell you this, its called unproductive capital and its gonna be a buzz phrase in a few years. ESPN will be one of the first to be defunded.
Wait until college football takes away half of the rivalry games. That’s going to have major impact on tv viewing numbers

The cable replacement streamers like YTTV and Hulu+ are susceptible to this too. They have to re-sign contracts with these channels periodically just like satellite and cable. Their business model is largely the same, just a slightly different transmission technology.
Sling has ESPN/Disney unavailable starting today also. Sounds like they are attempting to negotiate a deal though.

Ordinarily this would have no impact on me… except I’m on a work trip and the hotel uses Dish.

Guess I’ll be watching the game on my laptop with Hulu today.

You realize it's the networks taking Dish and their subscribers hostage, right? They have to pass the higher transmission rates onto their customers, and they know higher rates are bad all around....bad for customer retention and bad for the customers that choose to stay with them.

You realize it's DishNet that doesn't want to pay for a service, right, all the while raking in the bucks from subscribers, especially for stuff they didn't even ask for.

Let's say you provide a service through a middleman and you start charging him more for your product. Do you imagine he is just going to eat that increase? He may go elsewhere, or he may decide to quit buying from you. That's his prerogative.

Also, interesting that other providers find another solution besides yoinking the service and putting all the blame on you.

The same Texas Longhorn fans who were wlliing to blow up the Big 12 because they "deserved" the money, are now mad because Dish TV and Sling aren't carrying Longhorn football because they don't think they are worth it. It's kinda funny in a Gilligan kind of way.

No, you won’t be able to watch regular ESPN/ESPN2
Thanks. Now I remember, the US Open, I also put on the ESPN+ to watch matches that were on ESPN just to avoid the normal announcers. They showed the matches without logging into the cable provider but probably they were technically a different broadcast. Can’t tolerate John McEnroe or Chris Evert but was nice to hear the ball getting hit and the crowd and whatever announcers they were talked way less which was great too.

Viewers: man I love live sports! Can’t get enough! So glad I can ditch high-priced cable and stream/use Dish to watch my sports at a reasonable price. Just get me more sports! Suck it, cable companies!

Big schools/conferences: the appetite for live sports is infinite, we’re gonna consolidate into huge mega-groups to leverage our media rights

TV companies like Fox/ESPN: viewers love live sports, let’s throw billions at these mega conferences to telecast their games - we’ll just raise our transmission rates to keep that profit level up

Media carriage companies like Dish/YTTV/cable: welp, to keep these live sports programs on our service we have to jack up our fees to subscribers just to cover these high carriage fees. Either that or we play hardball and take those networks off to negotiate

I would entertain dropping Dish if we didn't have so much content saved on our DVR. Guessing there is probably some way to record it digitally record it somewhere but don't have the time these days to put that kind of effort into it.
This is my exact problem.

Well just signed up for a free 21 day trial of YouTube TV
It’s great….until your internet craps out and you realize you can’t watch tv.

In all seriousness though, we went to YTTV two years ago and haven’t looked back. Not cheap, but worth it IMO.

Someone explain to me how Dish benefits from dropping Disney (ESPN) or NBC (Olympics) right before they are needed for a football Saturday or a 2 week Olympic window? This seems to only be bad for Dish. Are they hoping customers pressure Disney and NBC for a better deal for Dish?

This is where my mom is too.

This strategy works because people who have those services can't easily (or don't want to) change providers. I was in this situation back before streaming was a thing and Dish pulled programming (think it was ESPN). It's not like I could have quickly switched providers - you have to call the competitor, schedule an appointment, wait for them to show up in an arbitrary 4 hour window, and then turn in a bunch of equipment to the company.

Nowadays, you click a few buttons and you can get the programming you want. It's exactly what I did this morning. Had been meaning to cut Sling for a while since we've got everything we want through Amazon, Disney+, and Netflix.

Ok - so I got dish network and stuck with it for the dish tailgater I use during ISU tailgates. What alternatives are out there for the tailgater?
