I've posted before so I'll repeat it. Campbell straight away told a current player at his official visit that the only way he'd leave ISU is for Ohio State, Notre Dame or the "right" NFL job. I translate that "right" part to a franchise with great ownership/brand like Pittsburgh, KC, NE, etc.
And while I would never be dumb enough to say "money doesn't matter," the reality for Campbell is:
- He has shot down other opportunities that probably pay as well as Nebraska would
- He could stay at ISU and his great-grandkids could have financial security - he's never getting fired
- The way his compensation is set up and frankly based on what his lifestyle appears to look like, he doesn't spend but a small fraction of his current salary
- I don't believe Heacock is going to make another move except to retirement, probably when Campbell leaves or even sooner - Heacock won't go with him if he takes another job.
- Manning probably will not leave with hopes of getting the HC job here when Campbell leaves - Manning probably doesn't go with him unless he doesn't get the HC job here to replace Campbell
So while most are full of **** when they claim the decision isn't mostly influenced by money, but Campbell knows he will never get fired here. Of course Campbell fully believes he will succeed anywhere, but he also knows that going about anywhere else the chances of getting fired and having a bump in the career path are greater than zero.
So for the millionth time, this is not a debate about whether or not X job is better than ISU. The debate is whether or not the current job in question is better than he could get if he was in the market. The answer with the Nebraska job is that it is probably not.
