Dekkers side arm throw

Concerning or nothing to worry about?
If he didn’t throw 2 picks I wouldn’t even bring it up but I do think this is a topic of discussion among fans.
Its not a side arm throw that is the problem.

1) Two of his three interceptions he has thrown very late across the width of the field - if there is one pass that is almost guaranteed to have a very high rate of interception it is those. The ball is in the air for a long time - no matter how strong the arm. He has a gun and just like all strong armed quarterbacks or fast running backs learn you can't out run everyone to the outside every time, he will learn - hopefully as the good ones do - that even for a howitzer armed QB, that is a bad throw to make.

2) The second was an admitted mental confusion / mistake between him and Noel. So it had nothing to do with his "side arm" throw

Post game, Dekkers said second pick was on him too.
Yep. Whether it was or wasn't that's what you want your QB to do - take the blame. I'm not doubting him just saying - its exactly the kind of thing you want your QB to do in taking the blame and saying its on him

First pick was a bad decision. Second pick was a miscommunication with Noel. If Noel turns the other way it's a nice pass.

I've only become more confident in Dekkers after seeing him the last two weeks. His arm talent is as good as I've seen in an ISU uniform. If he adds some polish, he will be drafted. He's only going to get better.

The guy is 2-0 as a starter and had a stellar first game. In only his 2nd career start he had to play in one of the most hostile environments he will ever play in against a really good defense. He had some big mistakes, but despite that he led the team down the field in arguably the greatest drive in Iowa State history to score the game winning touchdown and break a 6 game losing streak against our chief rival. On CF there is a thread debating the effectiveness of the arm angle on his throws. What a strange world we live in.

Tapping the brakes. Striving towards perfection shouldn't be misconceived as mean criticism. Maybe 'constructive' criticism, but not degrading criticism. Many on here are simply suggesting improvements which seem very logical. Some on here are more frustrated and just criticize as part of their persona. And most just shake their heads at nonsensical posts (maybe even this one :)). IMO every single person has room to improve and it's those that think they don't which are the most confounding (and frustrating) in life ... and the ones we should just simply ignore.

I have already achieved perfection as a poster - no room to improve.

I'm modest too!

You must not watch Mahomes throw the ball he throws overhand, sidearm, even some under hand anyway to complete the pass!

Tap your brakes, sir. I’m a huge fan of the sidearm throw. It’s basically a necessary part of the package with a modern QB. I was whatting the OP.

So does Dekkers?

The side arm only came out on some of those quick slant types in them middle.

Yeah, it seemed to me it was just to thread the needle on certain fast, short routes. Change the release point to whiz in around a DE arm and in front of the LBs, etc.
Ferentz noticed it too after the SEMO game, in the pre-game press conf:
“Well, he’s a left-hander, I’ll start with that. The ball still comes out, so you’ve got to defend it no matter where it goes. A little bit different. He’s got a little Ken Stabler, a little sidearm stuff in there every now and then, too, to get the ball around, so he did a good job. He really looked poised. Made good throws the other day, and they hit some big plays. They’ve got a good group of receivers. Tough to defend.
“But the biggest thing, he just looked like he was totally under control and they did a nice job offensively of executing and kept him clean, and he can pull it down and run it, too, when he needs to, but just a really impressive outing,” Ferentz said.

Dekkers and Mahomes both have that sidearm whip cause of the baseball background. It’s what helps make Mahomes elite. He can throw from every arm slot and angle, on the run, and maintain the same velocity, accuracy, and release time compared to a traditional pocket pass. You’d rather have and posses the skill than not.
I’m not saying Hunter is elite nor making that comp cause both aren’t close right now haha but essentially if he can develop that skill, I think it only increases his upside.
