Dog wanted out at 7:30 and thought I might as well grab his lead and get his walk in. He peed, drug me back to the house, picked up his dog bed and drug it in front of an air conditioning vent. If we are walking today, guessing it will be at night. He is a wimp compared to previous dogs. First black dog we have had, could that actually make any difference? I don’t like walking at night so I may need to get him up at 6:00 for the next few weeks (or rest of the summer).
Sounds like a smart dog to me.

I've had several black labs, you have to be really careful with them in the heat. They can get heat stroke really easy. A quick solution is just to wet them down when they are outside.

I have a black labradoodle who is worse than some cats regarding getting wet. We went out about 5:45 this morning.

Ok this is very useful. Thought I was maybe imagining it. Previously had yellow lab mixes. I always picked the yellow ones because my vision is poor and they are easier to see in the yard at night. But when the last one died, we had trouble finding shelter dogs during the pandemic and I fell in love with this little black lab mix. But he handles heat much more poorly than the previous dogs.

Yesterday I walked him in a park where I could refill his water bottle and I poured it on him several times. He stayed out there for two hours and we walked four miles plus lots of laying on picnic tables in the shade watching cows and birds.

Might be more just the dog type versus color. One of my parents dogs is an all black basset/lab mutt and he loves the sun. Down to the point of laying on the driveway in the sun in the dead of summer. He hates being cold (super skinny) and is actually grouchy the rest of the day if you make him get out of his kennel before 9 AM.

Sounds like this could be my dog spirit animal. :)

Yeah, get the hose out and soak him good, that undercoat will hold a ton of water and then if there is a breeze it keeps them cool for a while.

This could be something too. Vet speculation on the previous yellow dogs was lab/golden and lab/Pyrenees. This black pup they think is lab/boxer. All three dogs presented primarily as lab. The Pyrenees mix though was so well behaved and would routinely walk over seven miles a day with us.

This sounds like a plan. I need to go water the garden anyway. He always tries to eat the hose so he has it coming.

Not sure how much we got in south Ames, but there was definitely a lot. My backyard has quite a bit of standing water, and I don't think that's ever happened since we've lived here.

That was quite the storm. It lasted quite a while
