Doubt ISU is going to be involved but just some names that are left.

Akot from Boise State would be a good add. Good height and hit 38% with 55 made 3's over 32 games.

But with our current roster I don't think he sees 25mpg+ guaranteed. He's been a nomad, so I think he's looking to bump back up to P5, but would prefer a clear path to significant PT.

Also Kerwin Walton likely off the board soon.

Grandison visiting Duke.

Walton would of been a good backup plan if AJ didn't string us along until the 11th hour. Tech getting a good offensive player and will likely be able to mold him into a better defender.

The more I ponder the staff's thinking the more I believe they are confident that 1 or 2 of incoming freshman can contribute as solid B12 level and were just open to using the last scholarship on a true difference maker like AJ. Walton for example has talent but I'm not sure it is that much better than Watson or Eli King have and would be blocking their development if added. That doesn't also factor in adding Tre King at mid year. The staff isn't going to play 10-11 players so having a open roster spot to pick up a elite sit out year transfer for next year may actually be better long term.

Agreed here. You never know how it works out once you get out of the top 20 or so guys. But Eli King seems to get overlooked in my eyes. He was the top option as a guard for the midwest schools (Iowa, MN, Marquette) and then Stanford who likes to swing into MN to handpick a guy every now and then. He was a 4-star top 75 guy but then didn't play summer ball due to rehabbing his knee so his rating dropped.

To me he's one of those Monte or Hali-level guys that could really make a good, immediate impact. Especially if you only need 15 minutes off the bench. Not saying he has their ceiling but I could see him as a similar glue guy as a freshmen. But the flip side is that for every Monte or Haliburton there's probably 2 or 3 Terrence Lewis'. But now we get to use this year to find out what we have in King (or Lipsey or Watson for that matter) without the season riding on them being a 10 ppg player.

No one outside of the Green household actually thought he had a realistic shot at a guarantee until the final weekend workouts with the Bucks and Pacers
It's probably me but I guess I'm not understanding your argument. He should have committed and not taken those workouts after saying all along that he was going to go right up to the deadline? He was never dishonest about anything that was happening.

There's no "argument." He made a personal decision that was best for him. Unfortunately the aftermath of that decision leaves Iowa State in a tough spot. He did nothing wrong though.

We strung our selves along. AJ said from the beginning going pro was his priority.
The coaching staff got the guys they wanted out of the transfer portal. We took Williams and Holmes pretty early in the process, that indicates to me the coaching staff feels they are Big12 caliber starters.

Sure there were bigger names out there, but can't recruit a player if mutual interest isn't there.

IMO AJ Green was a unique situation. High level player whose dad happens to coach at ISU so we were going to wait on his decision. But if AJ wasn't out there, we might have been done recruiting perimeter players based on guys available. After all, not like AJ's family couldn't afford for him to walk-on at ISU!

I like our current roster. 8 players with extensive prior starting experience AND 3 solid freshman. Plus, Robert Jones is what he is. I have no issues if he has to play 15mpg against Big12 level competition.
