Tyrese Hunter Entering the Transfer Portal - NIL Speculation

My guess its not about revenge but being able to talk to him in person a few times a year.

In all seriousness, I think it is TJ taking the high road because it's best for Iowa State.

Badmouthing former players would be a bad look for a coach who recruits based on relationships and having the genuine best interest of his players at heart. Disparaging Hunter could hurt TJ and the program, saying nice things about him (such as hoping he lands in the best conference) could only help.

Also not much TJ can say since we basically started the whole transfer thing, we also take everyone elses transfers. So if he did say something he would be a huge hypocrit and it would not help our program at all. IT would basically be like Nick Saben trying to call out another coach for paying recruits to come to school there. Oh wait.

"NIL and free transferring are good for players!"

Sure, some of the time. Great for a Pack or Hunter who can charge a premium and will find a home.

But there is going to be a lot of guys orphaned or dropping down to D-2 as a consequence of this. Going to be easier than ever now to recruit over guys. Not everybody is going to benefit.

I don't think anyone forced them to join the portal. They are adults and can make their own decisions.

It is great for players- they are free agents to choose a new situation. The high profile portal guys are playing 30+mpg and use the portal to bump up to a higher level of competition or higher profile program or bigger paycheck.

But the vast majority of portal guys aren't playing big minutes. So they have to drop down a level(s) if they want to play. The reality is the chance to play is more important than sitting on the end of the bench. It would be interesting to see the portal stats broken down to provide better perspective:
  • P6 portal guys: % stay in P6, % drop 1 level (MWC, AAC, A10, etc.), % drop, % orphans,
  • MWC, AAC, A10: % bump up to P6, % lateral, % drop, %orphans
My guess is most players move to the level that matches their skills.

The other thing, a good share of these players are pushed out. So entering the portal isn't their choice. If a player is stuck in spots 10-13 on the roster- good chance they are shown the light and encouraged to move on with the coaching staff's support to find a better home.

There's not fewer spots, who's filling up the spots of the guys who were recruited over another guy?

Hunter seems to think schools are just going to throw millions at him. If he hasn't found a home by now, I don't know if that's likely to happen or not. Is anyone else over this and doesn't care if Hunter is successful or not since he completely abandoned this program? I get it that he's had a tough life and could use the money, but he didn't even give ISU a chance to try and make a NIL offer.

He didn't abandon this program. He doesn't owe ISU anything.
He could have easily pulled stake when ISU fired the coach he signed with.........he didn't.
He listened to what TJ had to stay, kept his word and was a huge part in 22 wins and a sweet 16 helping TJ's first year be a smashing success. He isn't obligated to do anymore than that.

If it's true he didn't give ISU a chance at an NIL offer...........maybe he just doesn't want to play here anymore. It happens. Happened all the time before NIL became a thing.
Sometime players just want to move on. It's not an indictment of anything.....just is what it is. Those of you taking it personal need to back away for a bit and lighten up.

I'm not taking it personal. I'm just saying that it doesn't matter to me if he succeeds elsewhere or not. A lot of people still seem so glued to where he's going to end up when it shouldn't even matter to us fans since he's already gone.

He owes ISU nothing. ISU fans owe him nothing. He's just another basketball player. So why should an ISU fan care at this point? There is a distinction between butthurt fans and fans who simply choose to no longer care.
