Yeah thats why last year for graduation I bought my 18 yr old daughter a 1 yr old car with 10k miles on it. then proceeded to buy a brand new set of rims and snow tires and sensors for $1800, just for winter driving to switch on each winter.

But you know me.

Now tell me what you have your kids driving and how you take care of their safety, while you project on everyone else. Claiming to be Righteous.

I would NEVER buy a cheap tire for my child. Call me whatever you want, but a couple hundreds dollars for rain handling and stopping are worth it IMO. I'm only 12 years from being a teenager. I remember how STUPID of a driver we are at that age.

If you buy a used car next year. Swap the good tires you just bought onto the new car or sell them.

Another option would involve buying a reasonable priced tire you feel serves your daughters needs; hold onto the crappy tires so that when you sell the vehicle, put the crappy ones back on before doing so. Keep the ones you bought for another vehicle(if that’s an option) or just sell them if that’s not an option. I did that with one of my sons cars years ago…we had another car that was able to use them

We totaled a car with tires that had less than 250 miles on them but insurance didn’t want to pay extra. The car was drivable for a short distance so we took it to the local tire shop and had four worn tires put on. Tire shop bought the good ones from me and sold them. Split it 50/50.

The insurance company sent their truck to the tire shop so the tires didn’t even need to hold air for a long period

Younger daughter has a 2009 Jeep Liberty, 106k miles, in decent shape, except for the tires. It's strictly an in-town car, she takes wifey's car or mine anytime she'll be driving 65+ on a highway/interstate. We're going to have this car one more year until she goes to college. Quote for new tires is $800+. That's a lot of cheddar and free new tire mileage to be giving away on a car that we'll have for probably <3,000 miles. Guy I work with suggested buying used tires, I didn't even know that was a thing. What would you do?

I got used tires in college. It's fine. I got them from the auto salvage place that used to be by B-Bops in Ames and is now east of town. They have a whole room of them stacked up. I'm sure it's more expensive now but it was incredibly cheap then. I just drove them over to like that Amoco on the corner of Lincoln Way and Duff and then installed them in about 30 minutes.

It may have been suggested already, but Sam's Riverside sometimes has good used tires on the cheap
