I just can’t wait to see the long list of players who have great freshman years so teams are willing to offer them $200k but they aren’t good enough to go pro and they also have zero competitive drive so they’re cool with being a walk on and the 18th man on a program who has a coach who wants to deal with a locker room full of 20 four/five star type guys.

I swear we have the dumbest ******* fan base in the country.

9 of the 10 guys they ran that system with went to the NBA. That could happen again but that wasn’t the argument. It was whether 10 other guys would be okay just sitting at the end of the bench knowing they could be starting elsewhere.
Does that starting role come with equitable pay?

Remember that one time in the last ten years a team was that deep. Now double that and expand it to like 30 teams, that’s the new normal according to some of the posters here.

This is a boring strawman.

How many of the deep bench at top programs could have gone nearly anywhere else?

If KU had 17 “scholarships” that paid twice what most others paid, do you think the 4 new roster spots would be guys most other programs didn’t want?

Guys already decide to sit for free at better programs. A few more sitting for pay isn’t a leap.

So you’re saying it’s going to be basically the same as it is now? The top programs get the best players, shocking.

Do you really believe 1 team is going to have such a collection of talent that they have no available scholarships, but give $250k to a guy to walk on? That 13th scholarship guy is for sure getting booted.

Just like all the UNC guys saying "no available scholarships." Ok... They've got like 4 guys, besides their walk ons, that got no minutes last year.
Probably not, but crazy things are happening. Look what Dougie Buckets did at Creighton a few years back. That decision is even easier if he is getting six figure NIL to boot.
Arkansas is currently at 14 schollys and still linked to almost every decent transfer. They supposedly are over $2mill in NIL (total) so MAYBE a NIL transfer ends up as a walkon. I don't know.

There are still tons of guys who aren't entirely consumed by the $$. Sitting on the bench and making $$ will do nothing towards a player's goal of making the NBA which is the #1 goal for these guys.
And everyone is going to be in the NBA.

Not exactly sure.
It’s literally the scenario people are describing. Multiple posters.
Yeah right. You do understand that as a walk on you can transfer with no sit time. So if you decide to transfer for money, it’s best to get them to pay you so you can be a walk on and transfer without penalty a second time if you chose to.

So now no one will want scholarships? It’s going to be a mad rush of top talent transferring and looking for walk on spots? Good lord.

Probably not. But it’s no different than people turning down higher paying jobs or leaving higher paying jobs for positions that are better for them and their future. Now, I realize we’re talking about 18-22 year olds so that throws a wrench into things lol

If every home bball game every fan put $5 in an NIL bucket we’d have well over a million per year.

That’s the dream and end goal for most players. Those who don’t have those aspirations are probably not good enough to get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars at a school like Kentucky.

Just like Church! Pass around the collection plate! Get Grandma to tithe 20% of her fixed income to pay Sportsball players! Cool!
Nice stereotype! BTW, the church I attend has an offering box in the back for people to give if they want. NO MENTION is made about the offering box. The only time that "giving" is mentioned is when there is a specific need (one time it was a family who were victims of a lay-off & were in a tough spot financially). I know of quite a few churches who practice the same type of things. Not all Christians are of the WACO variety.
