But do grad transfers need to be in by May 1st to play immediately? Their immediate eligibility is not due to the one-time exemption, or at least it wasn't. Did they get rid of grad transfers with everyone getting a one-time exemption, or if the transferring for the Covid free year as a graduate?

Yes, but the May 1st deadline quoted was for one time exemptions. If he’s not using that exemption, can he wait longer? So, again, is the grad transfer route to immediate eligibility still a thing and with same deadlines? Understand?
“A student-athlete who graduates with remaining athletics eligibility may be eligible as a full-time postgraduate student at another Division I school provided they meet the one-time exception criteria, including providing a written request to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal to their current school by May 1 if they participate in a fall or winter sport, or July 1 if they participate in a spring sport.”

Didn't Javan Johnson transfer at the end of August last year? He was a grad transfer.
I’m not familiar with the fine print. That was from their Q&A
With the NCAA it seems you can get an exemption to exemption rules at their whim.
“Generally, a student-athlete who has previously transferred from another four-year school would not be able to use the one-time exception as a postgraduate transfer. However, a waiver process exists for postgraduate students with a previous transfer history.”
If Bates comes he is instantly a Starter. Dude averages just under 3 blocks a game, and that doesn't include shots he alters. I would take him and Basile or Vander Plas. Our front court would be able to compete in the big 12, both on Offense and Defense. With either of those combinations.

My guess is you have to do those dates to force a coach to do it. After those dates a coach don’t have to release a player to the portal and they have to find a school without it. Most coaches I assume don’t care about the rule and release a kid. Except Bo Ryan.
There needs to be a point where coaches know what they have to replace. If a player doesn't have the decency to give his former team notice he doesn't deserve the automatic waiver.
Does this apply to coaching changes too?
There's all sorts of reasons why a player would want to transfer, and not all happen before an arbitrary date.

I don't know who Tyler is, but a random bringing this up on Twitter is not good.
I just don't see what Hunter would take that risk. They return Love and Davis. Hunter needs the ball, a lot, to be effective.
