Official Announcement of TJ as the New Iowa State Mens BBall Coach

The financial state of the athletic department at that time isn't comparable to what it was when Prohm was fired. Also anyone could see McDermott was in over his head after 1 season.

Creighton chose McDermott to be their next coach while he was the Iowa State Coach. What job was Steve Prohm offered after being FIRED from Iowa State? No one wants him.

Agree 100%. Far worse now seeing as how it financed $25 million in debt and weathered the near collapse of the Big12 with very questionable media rights bargaining coming up.

Also, for someone so "over their head", Creighton gave him 10 years for his first contract, one of the longest contracts in all of NCAA.

This statement is foolish for a couple of reasons, but let's see if we're revisiting that last sentence in a month.

What did he achieve at Iowa State that is better than Prohm's achievements?

Not requiring a massive buyout to have him move on. Not having the worst basketball season in Cyclone History. McDermott sucked.

So I was flipping back and forth between the Wisconsin and Boise State ending last night. Seemed weird to me, there was a huge amount of excitement from both fanbases, complete with a frenzied court storming when they won respective Big 10 and MWC titles.
I thought only 1 game in late March mattered and the rest of the season was irrelevant?

Those are achievements?

Steve had two 23 win and one 24 win season. A sweet 16, 3 NCAA invites and 2 conference tourney titles.

You must be suffering from selective amnesia.

1 game in late March has a weighted impact in terms of how it defines the season and historic perspective, right or wrong.

I'm 38, I remember the 00 and 01 teams. What I remember from 01 most though? Running out of gas against Baylor and Hampton.

I know they won the Big 12 regular season title, but that's not what comes to mind emotionally or mentally when that season comes up.

We've had some highs and lows through my time. Thankfully we seem to have a coach that 1. Knows how to get guys to Ames. 2. Seems to understand the importance and how to harness Hilton magic.

Hoping he can continue to build and we make a run THIS March.

Some mid-major with a marginal program in the southeast will eventually hire him. Steve is financially set for life so he won't have to find a big contract. He'll continue his coaching style of recruiting highly talented guards and tell them--- 'just go make a play'.

He is a good guy. He cares about his players. He should be at some tiny religious school in Kentucky doing exactly what you state above. He will be happy and successful at life.

Steve Prohm inherited great players and a Top 10 team. And left us after 6 seasons with a 2 win team that won ZERO Conference games. Worst season in Cyclone history. Steve Prohm has NEVER built a program. Prohm inherited great teams at Murray State and Iowa State. He drove the Iowa State program into the ground. To a level lower than we have ever been. Thank God we got TJ. You are the one with Selective Amnesia.

How do people still defend prohm? This is absolutely crazy. The guy was an absolute joke of a coach. Inherited a 67 corvette and somehow turned it into a is 1992 ford taurus.

How am I defending Prohm exactly?

Anything less than utter, complete, and ritual denunciation of all things Prohm is "defending" him to some. Even if any reasonable person would conclude regarding his tenure that it had its ups and downs and some good memories along the way but in the end he failed and deserved to be shown out.
