Official Announcement of TJ as the New Iowa State Mens BBall Coach

You don't need to wait that long. Might as well start now.

Edit: I was a party pooper in this thread and I'll own it.
He was the best candidate that would view ISU as a step up. Moser would have been a terrible hire and it’s showing at OU.
UNLV is a trash program where five stars go to be average. It was a bigger problem than TJ could fix.
Btw, the coaching search wasn’t even a search. It was TJ all along and it was decided in January.

To be fair, Greg couldn’t kill Hilton magic, it was already dead when he got there.

If we want to evaluate coaches, Fred did less with more than maybe any coach in ISU history.
Morgan had a fun run and magic was anything but dead. They pressed and ran. I'll fight anyone who tries to lump Morgan in w/ McD

And Chewy was the opposite end of the spectrum. He couldn't get out of the way if his life depended on it. Things would get tight and he'd flip to page 847 of the playbook instead of coaching up and trusting the players to handle it.

Prohm had signature losses, no doubt, but McD had exactly one signature win, and it was his 2nd to last (iirc the KState road win correctly) game as coach and there was really nothing to be built from it.

Again, levels of suck.
I had concerns about Prohm his first season. He inherited the #7 team in the nation which was arguably ISU’s strongest team historically including…

Niang Sr
Morris Jr
Nader Sr
Thomas Jr
McKay Sr

Burton Jr
Naz Long Sr
Cook So

…and they finished 10-8 in B12 play and #22 in the nation. 5 or 6 NBA guys and so much talent and we finished #22??? Only reason we made S16 was weak tourney games.

Careful posting this kind of stuff around here. There are alot of people who think Prohm did a phenomenal job that first year.
"We only went 7 deep, and made the Sweet 16".

Naz Long only played 8 games that season iirc.

They still definitely underachieved.

You literally can't list Naz Long when you're making your argument. So disingenuous.

Question for the TJ/Pollard haters. After seeing TJs first season is there honestly another coach you would rather have hired that would have been a realistic option last year? Who is it? If the answer is no then get over it.

The answer will be 'we never found out who the candidates were' which is true, but they'll also never name a proven coach who would realistically come to ISU.

Someone will probably say Mark Few. I feel like that name came up...like he's going to leave Gonzaga's best years to rebuild ISU in the free agent transfer era, at almost 60 years old.

I'm always torn whether that season or the Shayok team was the bigger letdown. 9-9 in conference and a 1st round exit to an incredibly mediocre tOSU was really a waste of talent.

Again, I'm not saying Prohm was John Wooden. Under achiever vs never achiever.

You think that was underachieving with that talent? Let me tell you the story of U, A, and B.

You're comparing being embarrassed in 1 game in the tourney to being embarrassed constantly throughout Prohm's first year.
UAB is more forgivable because they had a decent conference season, won the Big 12 tournament, and earned a 3 seed. None of those 3 things happened the next season.

Very few care. That’s the “UAB year,” like it or not.

Year 1 of Prohm had its problems but never such a colossal, embarrassing **** up.
