In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

Had a Great Plains cup for a loong time. 'The best cometh... eventually'

I remember the Omalley mcgees name but nothing else. Was a great irish place on South Duff, can't recall it either. And Ruttles.

CHC was awesome. I miss it a lot.

I also miss the Taco Bell that was next to it (which is now Dunkin). So convenient.

Dublin Bay? That's still there! Their menu has a lot of differences now, but still there!

I bet that is it! Wow, it was really good so glad its still there. Unlike some other well known places I've never understood the love for... :)

It's consistent, and clean, and good! That building was a revolving door of businesses before that, from what I remember seeing and reading, and it's been there for about 25 years?!

A lot of all stars on this list.

One I wanted to comment on was Chinese Homestyle Cooking. I was pretty sheltered as a child when it came to food, my parents don't eat ANYTHING. This was my first introduction to any type of foreign food outside of like tacos. Now I know there are so many better chinese places out there (shout out to May House), but CHC had such incredible bang for your buck.
The lady that ran that place was amazing. Her husband would be in the kitchen with another cook but she ABSOLUTELY ran the show.

I loved CHC's mongolian beef. I never get it anywhere else because I haven't found anything that came close to it.

Yeah I love mongolian beef if done right but everyone seems to have their own ways that its hard to find places that are really good. If you are in the Des Moines area Iron Wok near Jordan Creek is about the best Chinese I can find in town these days. Good mongolian beef there. There used to be a good place in the Cobblestone Market in Urbandale called Great China that was pretty good too but they closed a few years ago.

Every time this thread surfaces I think of some long gone favorites. Not just restaurants but bars too. These aren't all top notch places...but I miss them.

  • DaVinci's (RIP...although they still have several in Lincoln. And it's still fantastic)
  • Mr. Goodcent's (Still some in Missouri I still get it when down for Big 12 tourney)
  • Happy Joe's
  • Ruttle's
  • Home Team Pizza (HUGER HUGE!)
  • Gumby's (Their pizza sucked but their Pokey Sticks were amazing)
  • Hombre's
  • Chinese Home Cooking
  • Honky Dory's

I'd like to talk to the manager why O'Malley and McGee's isn't on your list.

One place in Ames I hope never closes is Pizza Pit! I still have to make a trip before basketball games a few times a season to Welch Ave Station just so I can order some wings and pizza from there and the sandwiches are yummy as well. We used to get Pizza Pit probably once a week in the dorms, their $5 late night special for a large 1 topping was probably the best pizza in town IMO. That and Gumby's pokey stix, their pizza was blah and pricey but the 2 for 1 pokey stix nights were great.

Anyone else remember a guy 10/15 years ago that used to have a pizza trailer oven and would park it in front of the bowling alley on Duff?
Kind of wood fired before wood fired became really popular. It was great.
I don't think it was the guy that opened in the Mongolian building corner.

You just came STRONG with the info! I remember Mikado and Tequila firsthand from going in middle/high school, but never went to the others. I do remember driving by when it was Hombre's.

I remember actually liking the food at Tequila quite a bit, I think maybe better quality than La Fuente? But they didn't have a margarita challenge, so they were always going to lose that war.

Don't worry they were probably out of shirts anyway.
