This is my concern. If I recall, his kickoffs regressed throughout that game against Baylor. Went from touchbacks to kicking at about the 5. Could have been wind/direction of kicking/my consumption of whiskey, but I remember thinking that during the game.
All three first half kickoffs were for touchbacks.

The first kickoff of the second half was to the goal line and returned to the 23. The one after that was kicked to the two and we won't speak anymore about it. The next kickoff was a touchback, then the last kickoff was an onside kick.

4 of 6 were touchbacks, including the last kick of the game. It almost seemed to me that it was an intentional decision to kick those other 2 higher instead of 8 yards deep in the endzone. If that's the case, it needs to never happen again.

According to FEI, we are 129th overall in special teams and field position (FBS/FBS games only).

125th and 126th in punt returns and punt coverage, respectively.

95th and 122nd in starting field position and opponent starting field position, respectively. 119th in net starting field position difference.
you know, the more I hear about these special teams they're starting to sound like a real jerk!

You're tiresome and ignorant. Marginally stupid as well. Let's grab a beer sometime. We'll get along well.
TX I hear you in not throwing attacks/character assassinations at players. Do you think objectively discussing what is/isn't working and mentioning individuals by name (not talking about Twitter @'ing them) is out of bounds as a loyal fan?

Punting is very difficult to correct midseason. It usually involves getting a new punter.

That happens when you return a kickoff for TD and boot the punts that they do.

Yes and No. They're number 1 because of Trestan Ebner who's now returned 3 kicks for TD.

I was curious about why Noel was so out of position on his punt returns. The reason was going into last weekend's game, the baylor puter was averaging 35 yard kicks. Against us he averaged 55 yards.

I've heard of playing vanilla on offense, but never in punting...

Don't need to be Top Ten in these categories but if 'details' is going to be mantra and the way you have to win at ISU, this obviously is a big fail.

Field position is an offensive problem too.
Yes - we don't need exceptional special teams, just competent special teams. We have the tools on offense and defense that we can beat most teams we play as long as special teams keeps up. But they way it is right now, its like we're running a race and giving everyone else a 20% head start.

The trajectories of Dunn and Shook
punting side by side is obvious. That said pregame and halftime warm ups obviously don’t tell the whole story.
But Dunn’s warm up punts don’t look different than his in game punts. Line drives every time. I have a hard time believing his punts during the week are different.
Thats the exact point I'm getting at. There has to be some reason they aren't putting Shook in there. I would rather have his punts vs Dunns any day. But there has to be something with Shook that the coaches don't like, otherwise it just doesn't make sense as to why he isn't getting more reps or chances.

Obviously the coaches are well aware of how crappy the special teams have been. The question is really what to do about it mid-stream. If a better punter is available you would hope they’d be trying them by now.

Anyone have any idea how good Tyler Perkins, our punter recruit, is? I've heard he's like #1 or #2 in the country, but how good is he actually?

I hate this quote from Campbell so much

“I think what is going on there from a mental standpoint, man, my heart goes out to him, because you’re taking about a kid that’s fought (so hard) to get back,” Campbell said. “And the injury that he had is not like — man, it’s a torn Achilles. And you’re talking about a guy that uses his legs to produce success. So I think from my end of it, that’s why there is a loyalty to him, because I saw what he had to go through to put himself back on the football field. I’d rather ride with a guy that’s going to strain like that to get back than say, we’re just gonna go our separate ways. So I think Corey will only continue to work through it.”
