It’s pretty normal for a coach to be good at one school and not another. He was also pretty good his first HC job, and his second stop he went in fill rebuild mode after the first year. So it’s hard to gauge since he came to the job he wanted all along before finishing said rebuild. UNLV also hired from within, because they wanted to continue what TJ started.

I think UNLV hired Kruger because he played at UNLV and they hope some of his dad rubbed off on him. With all their recent coach turnover, they were looking for a coach who could be a 5-10 year guy. He's their Paul Rhoads.

If they were hoping to continue what TJ started it didn't happen because they are going to have about 10 new players in their roster next year.

Yeah somehow they landed 4-5 big 12 transfers.

Mid majors fail at this level all the time. What kids want to play for Moser? No ones going to want to play his slow it down system. We’ll get to see first hand what Moser can do at this level. I don’t think he’ll be a success.

Coaches fail all the time, midmajor coaches replace them. Most new coaching hires are midmajors moving up or in-house assistants. Other than Johnny and Fred, I can't think of an ISU coach who didn't come from midmajor ranks.

He must really suck, only leading Loyola to one final four.
I think Porter is a very good coach. I also think that it’s very hypocritical those saying they wanted Porter instead of TJ and use TJ’s two years at UNLV against him.

From 2003-2014, Porter had 1 single season in which he had a winning record. 1.

He's definitely figured some things out the past 4 years. I'm not sure though that a coach that got fired by Illinois State is ever going to kill it in the best conference in college basketball. It's nice to have a couple new coaches in the conference that have a decent possibility of failing(Porter Moser, Mark Adams). Gives us a little more hope at being successful.

Very possible. I just find it odd seeing people say “he’s only been to ONE final four!” When we just hired a dude that’s never won a game in the tourney.

Not anymore hypocritical of those pimping what TJ did with Nagy's players......yet beating Prohm for what he did with Fred's. Is Wayne a better coach than GMAC because he had 3 winning seasons at ISU and Greg had none. Or let's use what all the "in the know" enlightened crowd used against Prohm from day one.........inherited roster. What has TJ done anywhere at anytime as a head coach with a roster full of nothing but his recruits?

Or.....we can use the Cyclonefanatic Sesame Street words of the day the last two years which are "trajectory.....culture.....pieces". One could say it took Moser that long to get the right "pieces" to have his "culture" so as to put Loyola in the right "trajectory". You can't use the "roster he inherited".

No, Moser has proved he can get the job done....with his own players at a school which was a college BB dumpsite. Let's hope TJ can do just as well at a good P6 job.

I think what you’re seeing is what another poster and me were responding to, in which someone said we should’ve hired Porter because “he’s taken Loyola to Final Fours two out of the last three seasons”.

You realize I’m not making a dig at Porter Moser whatsoever right? I think he’s a very good coach and it took him some time but I believe he found the right formula to win. I think he knows what he’s doing now, but it might take a couple of years for that to transition to the Big 12.

A good coach doesn't have one style of play. Look at Mcdermott, when he came to Iowa State he was locked in on a slow grind it out offense but at Creighton he figured out how to adapt (thanks Doug). It sucks that we were the guinea pig but good coaches figure it out.

Prohm is an example of hitting gold on 4 stars, but never getting a 3 star to develop. His 4 star guys were better than advertised. But his three star kids couldn’t even make a D3 roster. He missed far more often than he hit.

It's easy for us to sit here and simplify the recruiting misses bit in all reality it was a bit of a snowball effect. Steve inherited a major scholarship issue/imbalance when he came to Iowa State. THT and Tyreese were the building blocks for the future but we all know how that turned out. The transfer market was Prohms biggest weakness. Early in his tenure he needed a couple of multi year contributors to give the young roster time to develop. The reality of the situation is that Steve had to put a lot of young guys on the floor before they were ready and it just didn't work out. This happened over and over and led to guys leaving before they could truly develop.

Steve didn't HAVE to do anything. He FAILED to recruit complimentary players his entire tenure at Iowa State. The so called "roster imbalance" could have been rectified if Steve could have recruited the players to do it. It was like he had no relationships built with players or high school coaches before he came to Iowa State.
