***Official 2021 NCAA Tournament Thread***

I didn't hear them say that. Mentioning Duke I get, considering the high program profile. But gee whiz, ours happened two decades ago and there have been, what is, 5 since? MT over MSU was at least as much of a shocker than ISU's loss and it's far more recent.

It was more about Hampton and their reaction, lifting their coach, etc. But they did say, "What about that Hampton vs. Iowa State game."

What about it? It sucked!

If you've heard the story from Shirley, before that game Larry was saying things like I don't want to ****ing coach you guys anymore so in hindsight the result wasn't a shocker. That team at the end was a vehicle with a couple of tires missing.

Yeah I've read that...after they got lit up in Austin they just weren't the same.

It certainly wouldn't surprise me as that game, while shocking, was still somewhat evident based on how the end of that season went. You could see the wheels coming off going into the Conference tournament.

A couple games at the end of the year that in hindsight were an omen of things to come

Not ready to dance on the Big Ten grave as it’s way too early here folks. If Michigan, Illinois and Iowa all do what they are capable of then what’s happened so far is just a one-off upset and a few meh teams losing. Better just have Iowa lose to Grand Canyon to make sure we can start saying overrated :)

I will never forget them holding up the SEC signs after they won the Big 12 tournament.

One of the many reasons why I absolutely f*ckin' despise the state of Missouri. Other than Kansas City and St. Louis and probably Columbia it's nothing but rednecks and meth.

Yeah the big money grab was on.

Oh well. The outcome was round robin conference scheduling and way more interesting seasons (so long as the team is decent :-/).

Also with hindsight with a random touch-point, it seemed like after ISU completed the sweep of KU that year, they didn't seem to have as much fire. There were wins over K-State, Nebraska and Tech outside of the UT blowout, but I recall thinking those games looked uninspiring. At the time I thought my standards had gotten inflated expecting to flatten everyone or something.

Iowa State wasn't the first one it happened to. It wasn't the last. It wasn't the highest profile program on the list.

If there wasn't that damn video of the Hampton coach getting picked up from behind by one his players, the whole episode would have faded into history by now.

What didn't help our situation is it didn't happen again for another decade, so it was "the upset" talked about for that period of time. But then it happened twice in 2012 (including Duke), then once every few years, and also since then a #1 seed has gone down. It's just not the big deal it was a decade ago. I can't even remember the last time I saw the video you're referring to.

It felt like the team ran out of the proverbial gas after getting blown out by Texas late in the season. Sure, we won comfortably in home games against Tech and Nebraska after that, but it just felt different - the team just wasn't the same. Then Baylor happened. Then the Tournament happened. The team played at a level above what they probably really were all year.

They got 4 of the top 8 seeds. They would have to totally suck to not get a few sweet 16 teams out of that.
