Next up. Fresno State vs. Colorado State, 2230.I don't think he is the guy we are looking for but we could do much worse.
He is probably the best coach in the Mountain West. Hanging right with Utah State and SDSU with a much less heralded group of players. They have an exciting brand of basketball going.
I would take him over Smith and Devries.
USU definitely has better players - may be a function of Smith being there one year longer or maybe USU was in better shape as a program than UNLV.Utah State definitely playing better in the 2nd half. The otzelprohms are struggling.
I like Utah State's bench energy.
Also if we could hire Smith can #23 come along?
They’ve always been able to hire great coaches. Hiring has never been a perfect science. Those schools aren’t hiring better coaches at a higher rate. Iowa St out-paid Michigan in the 80’s. That would never happen now. That gap has only grown in favor of the rich. The issue is much more of a systematic shift than this issue.
When the Utah States or Nevada’s can hire good coaches too the UNLVs aren’t at so much of an advantage.
Same concept but when good players can go to the smaller schools in conference and still get the same exposure that shifts the balance. The other schools can now get good players too.
It’s as Breece Hall said 5 star culture vs 5 star talent. Look at the Dave Rice years at UNLV. They got a ton of talent but they weren’t a team. UNLV fans and boosters still think they can just out resource people and win. Fixing that is something they don’t give anyone time to do.
Your arguments are failing as we speak. TJ came up short during the season and now during the conference tournament. The problem is I don’t think people here are the majority of the fans. I think most casual fans would be thrilled with TJ.
UNLV is like Texas. They have a bunch of rich entitled donors who think they should be better than they are. They haven’t made the tournament since 2013. They just aren’t that much better than the rest of their conference. TJ had them second in the conference last year and people think he’s the worst coach in the conference. What they think plays no factor in what we should think.
Also, Nick Weiler-Babb says hiAre you trolling?
BDJ, McKay and Burton say otherwise. Nadar too, given he committed within his last two years.
Utah State is a much better team. Nobody is arguing differently.Your arguments are failing as we speak. TJ came up short during the season and now during the conference tournament.
Gates, Grant, Tang, Smith, Devreis, Medved. I'd be happy with any of these. What do I know but if all things equal, Gates, Grant, Tang first. It would be the Jack Trice thing to do.
From what I've seen of Utah State, UNLV, and the Mountain West (not much other than these two on a limited basis), Id put Gates #1, Tang or Grant #2-3, then Smith, DeVries, Medved (any order) #4-6. Other good candidates also.I still think Dennis Gates should be Pollard's No. 1 target.
I feel defensive as for some reason TJ seems to be mentioned, many times before as the odds on favorite for the ISU position. I don't believe he has earned the position to be considered the #1 choice. I think there are better candidates.Utah State is a much better team. Nobody is arguing differently.
Bad coaches can have good teams and good coaches can have bad teams.
Craig Smith is a good coach with a good team. TJ is a good coach. Who we should hire depends on the interview process. What is their plan and how are they going to accomplish it.
As I’ve said repeatedly if you want Craig Smith great. If you want Darian DeVries great. If you like that Cleveland State coach great. Having a preferred candidate is great. There is no obvious choice.
Acting like good coaches are awful is moronic. Lots of people are doing this instead of preferring their candidate
Wonder how good USU would be without 23? He is a huge difference maker and could be a once in a career type player for a coach. Has 23 been there all 3 years with Smith, if so he makes Smith or any coach look good.
Why is it that TJ is a good head coach with a bad team when maybe it was he was a bad coach that inherited good teams at SDSU?Utah State is a much better team. Nobody is arguing differently.

Sounds like Steve Prohm 2.0 to me.Why is it that TJ is a good head coach with a bad team when maybe it was he was a bad coach that inherited good teams at SDSU?
I don’t think he’s bad, but as you said, bad coaches can have good teams, particularly when inheriting a good situation. So a coach somewhere between bad and good can certainly have good teams.
Gotta give Smith credit for signing him late. This isn’t a inherit Daum situation. What a late find by SmithWonder how good USU would be without 23?
