Coaching Search: Place your bets

From what I know of TJ, I rephrase it as he actually wants to win here. He knows the program and he knows himself. has a plan. He’ll do what it takes, including self-reflection and knowing his limitations.

As opposed to Steve Prohm actually wanted to lose here?

You know, in your statement I could replace TJ with GMAC because this explaining of TJ's inner being was used countless of times during GMAC's tenure by his minions while pleading for patience. Almost to the point where it felt they were going to invite us all to get into a drum circle and sing Kumbaya oh Greg, Kumbaya.

Mark Pope’s BYU team looks quite solid tonight. Up 10 on Gonzaga at the moment.

I would like TJ. He’s had a couple of go’s at HC at different schools. He will have more money at his disposal for assistants and just more money overall. He would have an easier time recruiting bigger names. He will have had more HC experience than Hoiberg did coming into the job, and he can actually recruit, and as far as I know he likes it. I could see him being easy to bargain with at first while we deal with buyouts, since ISU is high on his list.

As opposed to Steve not be willing to do what it takes to win, whether due to arrogance or ignorance. No coach’s inner being has been used to lipstick shortcomings as the coach of ISU MBB more than Steve’s. Which was to be expected after it played too much of a role in his hiring.

As I said, a coach wanting to be here, which is shorthand for implying they want to stay here, isn’t terribly important. A coach saying it (Steve) means even less. But a coach with a plan on how he wants to win here built on direct experience here is much more relevant than the lip service from Steve, an OVC coach that lacked insight and the self reflection needed to overcome that.

Anyone knocking Fred is really something. He’s the most successful coach in the history of our program and left to coach an NBA team - and actually made the playoffs with the Bulls (unlike Floyd).

We all know how that tenure ended and how things are going at Nebraska. It’s not super encouraging. Catching lightning in a bottle twice may be impossible given the changes in the game. There are certainly negatives about Fred and might be a handful of realistic candidates who would even do better than him here. But to think we wouldn’t at least consider bringing back the person with the greatest tenure in our history, if there was mutual interest, would be so dumb. He’s literally proven he can win over a 5-year period at Iowa State and the core group from the end of his tenure won games in the tourney both of Steve’s first two years. He started a 6-year tourney run and brought back Hilton Magic.

Fred or TJ? Fred or Craig Smith? Fred or Dennis Gates? Fred or Porter Moser? I’d choose Hoiberg in every case even with what’s happened since he left. If Altman is interested, awesome. I’d be pretty happy if we hired Chris Beard or Nate Oats but they aren’t coming.

If you are going outside the box. Why not hire an African American coach. Makes more sense than a white woman!

Anthony Grant - Dayton HC
Dennis Gates - Cleveland State HC
Dana Ford - Mo State HC
Dwayne Stephens - Mich St Asst
Micah Shrewsberry - Purdue Asst.
Jerome Tang - Baylor Asst.
Who out of this group do you guys think is most ready I'm a little knowledgeable with Dana Ford, our neck of the woods, comes off well, well spoken, intelligent, I think a very good coach. But only his 2nd year at Missouri State so not sure if ready yet.
Avery Johnson? Why should he not be considered? Brought in many of the current Alabama players that Nate Oats is now using and Top 10.

Has Avery been talked about yet?

This guy deserves an interview. Guys on ESPN calling his program a mini FSU. Says they have an unbelievable culture that this coach installed in only two years, which stuck out huge to me.

I’d be happy if we went this route. I want someone who has P6 experience and knows what it takes at this level to win. Which is also why I’m not as low on TJ as others. Give them someone that fits that mold over a low major coach with no P6 experience.

I've watched zero Cleveland St games this season but I've bet on them covering probably 6-7 times and I've only lost once. Bring him in! Also, taking a coach out of Ohio worked the last time for ISU. :)

Didn't scroll through past posts in this thread, but would we have a shot at Musselman - Arkansas? He was awesome a Nevada and will prolly have Ark as a 2, or 3 seed. Again, it would be a long shot, but is there a chance ?
Was just reading a story about this.
If Pitino is canned, he would look at New Mexico and Musselman would be probably interviewed at Minny, along with Medved.
Musselman is the 12th highest paid coach in the SEC @ only 2.5 mil. I thought it would have been much higher.

Just curious on Avery. I did a little research on this years Alabama team. Most likely their success is more due to Oates. 2-3 of their best players are his recruits, including Shackleford, His up-tempo game, his empahsis on defense also, his breaking of the players wanting to shoot mid-long range jumpers for 2, instead of short shots, layups and 3's which he things/says are more effective. And he is recruiting shooters who are willing to play defense even though they are one of the fastest paced/shooting teams out there.

So I think It's Oats just being a really good young coach, now coupled with Alabama prestige and money. Just a great hire by Alabama. They need to lock him in to a longer term contract with raise if they haven't alreay done it.

Late to the game. In terms of wants, Beilein and Moser are at the top of my list. I think Moser could come in and have an impact that is similar to Beard immediately (competitive with lesser talent due to scheme). But, have been told there is not much mutual interest.

Think TJ is the pick.

I gleaned that Nate Oats style at Alabama is: play fast, easy close-in buckets or 3's, hard defense. He uses analytics/statistics. Here is a good article on him and Alabama's turn-around.

What is TJ's style? I heard he also likes the 3. What else? To be honest he has only one recruiting class, is that right?

What is Craig Smith's style, coaching strengths?

What is your favorite ISU-coach-to-be again, and his coaching style, strengths?

I can name at least 5 coaches that would be better than TJ and have proved it. If anyone has watched UNLV it’s the same nonsense we have been dealing with with Prohm. No defense, no rebounding, standing around on offense. No identity. If you watch UNLV you would swear Prohm is coaching them

Now I am going to be sick.
