Elisa Lam doc on Netflix

I studied this case pretty extensively about 5 years ago, but this new documentary contained a lot of information that I never seen before. I like these new documentary series that are from the detectives point of view (Richard Ramirez and Peter Sutcliffe ones were really good!).

I don't agree with the coroner ruling it an accident. That may have been what happened, but it's crazy to toss out potential foul play because the evidence does not indicate that either is out of the question. But I suppose ruling out foul play means they can close the book on a case they were never going to solve anyways.

Agree! I always heard the tank lid had been closed behind her. Turns out not so. Not sure why the police never searched the tanks. Must have been in a hurry.

I got into watching this. Not sure why.? So they searched the roof with the dogs via light from the helicopter. Why they couldn't tell the tank lid was open from the sky shocks me. Also the next day is when they all got pulled of for that ex cop that went crazy. And the elevator has no solid explanation

I thought they said that she pressed the "door hold" button, which keeps the doors open for two minutes. They went to that same elevator and confirmed it did this.

This case has always fascinated me (same with Maura Murray's disappearance, which is completely different). I hope I can find time to watch this.

Made it through the first 2 episodes last night, really creepy.

Imagine booking that hotel on priceline in the UK and your fun in the LA sun turns out to be a giant homeless camp and drinking corpse water.

We watched this tonight.

A tragic portrait of a girl troubled by mental illness and the perils of internet sleuthing in the absence of all the facts.
Yeah, I get there are some weird things about it, but it seemed fairly clear to me that it was a case of mental illness.

And those people on the internet went way beyond the Pale. Especially how they ruined that musician's life because he happened to make a video a year before her death that he was at that hotel

It was 2 episodes longer than it needed to be. Felt like the real story was the internet “sleuths” making money off the conspiracies, death tourism, etc.

The actual case really isn’t that unique.

What floor was she/elevator on when she pushed all the buttons?

I have family and close friends who have done dangerous things because of bipolar. Climbing onto a hotel roof and jumping into a water tank is next level though. Hard to imagine someone doing all of that just because they were having an episode.

Having worked in the industry that supported those with mental health, it is a example how delusional and erratic some can become when they have quit taking their meds. Especially if in unfamiliar surrounding and nobody they know around them.

Agree....I hadn't heard of the case, so the build up really made it feel there would be more than it was.

I've listened to a few podcasts on this case and was intrigued by the Netflix mini-series. I finally watched it over the weekend. It didn't really give me any new information, but I thought they gave way too much airtime to the internet sleuths and conspiracy theorists. I really feel bad for that musician whose career was essentially ruined. I also feel bad for her family. This was definitely a case of mental illness, and I can't imagine what those last few days were like for her.

why didn’t the elevator door shut?
Because the bottom button she pushed was the 'door open' button. Some of the web sleuths recreated it and it will keep the door open for 2 minutes. My only question with it being a suicide/accident is how the hatch got shut. Oh, and wtf don't they have a lock on the latch to the drinking water for a hotel?
