First call has to go to Beilien or Matta, possibly Sampson. There's a 1% chance of any of those happening but you have to at least try.

After that I'm really torn between TJ and Devries. I not a TJ expert at all but he doesn't strike me as a solid x's and o's guy, just a top recruiter. Devries is obviously an x's and o's guy but I worry about him recruiting to this level. So I guess its anybody guess which one would be better.

Devries could bring his son, Foster, Hinson, Hunter, Johnson, Bolton as the starting 5, Dubar and Walker improve alot with proper coaching, Tre is the 6th man. Its prob not a torunament team, maybe 7-11 ceiling but its a solid start to get some respect back.

People really think everyone will come back?

that’s cute.

You mystify me sometimes. Some of your posts are insane, but this one is really wise and insightful.

I guess you have to hear the pitches from TJ and DD...

Ask TJ, "We all know you can recruit, but what is your plan for a staff and building a program?"

Ask DD, "We respect your in-game coaching abilities and your impressive run at Drake, but how are you going to plan to bring high-major talent to Ames that isn't related to you?"

See who has the better answer.

I expect a coaching change to lead to no shortage of roster changes, but if somebody can keep the talent that we do have around, it is probably TJ. He has something of a track record. He kept a lot of talent around in the interregnum between McDermott and Hoiberg and then again between Hoiberg and Prohm. He's a charming guy who might be able to bond with some of them quickly, and he has the Wisconsin connection going for Hunter.

It might not work, but that's another question you ask, "What is your plan for retaining the talent we do have?"

You are right that walking into next season with this...

Hunter
Bolton
Johnson
Hinson
Foster
---
+Jackson

...isn't winning the Big 12, but there's enough talent there to be respectable.

What good does it do to fire a coach during the season? Maybe lock him in a closet during practice, and see if other coaches can teach a player how to block out and rebound.

It sends a message that ISU will not put up with ********. However that type of move should only be followed by at least a fairly big hire.

Why is that? Honest question.
He has a president from a basketball school (Gonzaga) and an AD that gets it from a basketball perspective also (Marquette). Drake has never been more poised to do great things. The timing just did not work out for ISU in this instance.

He has told those he works with that he won't come here.

You might be right (although I doubt Devries is telling too many people he'd turn down P5 jobs that aren't even open yet. But its also difficult to turn down a 4x salary increase too (he's making $500k at Drake). He may love Drake but opportunities to coach at P5 schools, especially ones with some basketball success, don't come around too often.

I think TJ has all of the qualities we would look for:

-P5 assistant experience
-He knows what it takes to win at Iowa State
-Head coaching experience at two places

Ultimately, I'd be fine with hiring him. But I REALLY hope Pollard would conduct a full search and see what's out there before settling on one person as he's had a tendency to do in the past. Rumors had it that some decent head coaches reached out about the opening before Prohm was hired (Marshall, Dixon) and there is always a small possibility a good coach wants to move on from their current situation.

Pollard would try to be done by lunch.

Yep. I dont have a problem with TJ being on the list of potential hires. He should be. But there should be a list, and a net cast to see who we can get. And if Pollard thinks TJ is the best one of what comes out of that, then I'm fine with that.

I didn't watch the last two games. Must have been pretty bad. Not that we don't suck anyways but are we really holding Prohm over the fire when 4 starters are inactive with Rona?

Rona or not, we're still having historically bad games. Plenty of seasons where there have been key players out where we weren't getting blown out by 40 by rather mediocre teams like KP #67 Mississippi State.

Pollard is never going to hire Sampson even if he would want the job. Good coach, but (thankfully) Pollard clearly values moral character above most other things. We won’t get someone likely to play loose with the rules.
