watched some of Utah St vs Colo St tonight - man both of those teams would crush us.

In just 10 minutes of watching, I'm sold on Craig Smith. Utah State moves the ball, can guard dribble penetration, had several offensive rebounds, and scored on out of bounds plays 3x (2 were lay ups). They play as a team, hustle, cut, and have shooters who can get open and drain the three. Also have a big man who's developed over his career, and he had 8 boards after 10 minutes in the 1st half. They specifically took out CSU's best player, and could easily guard the pick and roll and didn't automatically switch on wimpy screens.

Reminded me of what good basketball looks like.

4 tourney teams this year in the mountain west - TJ's in a tough spot this season for sure.
Medved, Smith, Dutcher, and T.J. would be vast improvements. Smith checks the boxes and if we don’t act this year there will be plenty of better jobs available in 2022-23 that could interest him more.
Watched the Crimson Tide tonight as well. Nate Oates is a helluva coach.

BT ranking of teams with many of the coaches mentioned in this thread...

#33 = Utah State
#35 = San Diego State
#49 = Drake
#94 = Colorado State
#122 = Iowa State
#125 = UNLV

Seems we have a thing about pilfering the Mountain West Conference.

Ncaa should send down word that it is no longer viable to continue playing the season if your team fails to meet a certain criteria, like having any shot at a post season berth. Put teams like ISU, KSU, Nebby and UNI out of their misery. Start the tournament early and reduce the field. It's fairly obvious who the top 20 or 30 teams are

this may be elsewhere but I was told last night by a donor that Sukup and some other "Large" donors have stated they are done with Prohm. It's been discussed that he will accept a position with Wichita State, where apparently he is good friends with the AD...and leave of his own accord as opposed to being removed, thus saving face.

Rumor, I realize...but figured I'd share. It sounds like a glorious solution to me.

I would be SHOCKED if Wichita state hired Steve prohm, a coach who has ran ISU into the ground, for anything more than an assistant coach position on their basketball staff.

Why? GMAC flushed this program and his friend at Creighton had no problem with it.
Prohm would still be out of his element, even at a school like WSU. I mean, potentially he's not as bad as he seems and just needs a fresh start somewhere, anywhere. But WSU still seems more big time than what he appears capable of. I could see him going to a low major school in the south if he still wants a head coaching gig. Chattanooga or Kennesaw state or something of the like. If Wichita is really interested, I'd have to think for an assistant role.

1) Prohm has set back ISU further than McDermott did

2) WSU is a better job in 2021 than Creighton was in 2010

3) McDermott actually built UNI into a mid major program. Steve took over one already humming and got out before he had any down seasons

"Potentially" not as bad? He has won here.........doesn't matter who was on the roster. GMAC never did. I'm not chasing that flush because a turd is a turd whether you like them or not. I'm just responding to why a friend wouldn't give a friend...................who has won........a chance. Because GMAC's friend knew he could win as he had shown everywhere but ISU.

That could be said during a lot of seasons, by late-January.
True, but teams 30-64 have a drastically lower chance at making a run in March. In a covid year, why string them along? If they let say half the normal field in, 32, that would still make for a compelling post season tournament, you just would be lacking all of the Valparaiso, Loyola etc Cinderella type moments. It would be a safer alternative than inviting the full field of teams from all over the country and having them all infecting each other. And just keep the same date for end of conference season, Feb 27. Cancel conference tournaments, allow for the recommended quarantine time, and jump right into the madness.

Like I said to the previous poster.......I'm not going to argue which turd smells better. I'm just responding to why a friend wouldn't give a friend a chance. They both have proved they can win.

That’s fair. A unique element to Wichita State though is what Charles Koch wants. The Wichita State AD could be Steve prohms twin brother and If Koch doesn’t want him it’s probably not going to happen.

Frustrating that ISU seems to have been the tough job for GMAC, and who knows, maybe Prohm moves on and proves he can coach too. If that does happen, maybe it's just as difficult to win in Ames in basketball as it is football.

Yeah I don't believe it for a second but WSU giving us the golden parachute here would be ideal.

This team would beat the team McDermott would have had coming back after Brackins, Gilstrap, and Hamilton all left, and that is before you assume some other guys (e.g., Garrett) might have left, as well.

I am extremely disappointed with the outcome of the Prohm era despite some triumphs early on, but saying that we are now in a worse place than when we hired Fred is silly. Things were atrocious then.

The worst Prohm team and the best McDermott team would be pretty evenly matched.

He had success at a lower level and think about the image aspect. Hire someone squeaky clean like Prohm and also someone who is much more player friendly to replace Marshall. They are going to want an image shift.

I want a coach like Scott Drew. No Idea about his current staff, but maybe he has a solid assistant we can steal.

First, I actually agree. Scott Drew is a great coach, and I'd love for what's happened at Baylor to happen at ISU.

Second, its funny, but this board used to rip Drew as a horrible coach, including his inability to handle timeouts and in-game coach well. At the time, those objections were valid. We used to do the same thing about Shaka Smart and even inFranity. We loved that they didn't get fired as their programs would never be elite. I'm still not 100% sure on Iowa or Texas going forward, but I think Baylor will be a powerhouse for years.

Third, Drew and Prohm are very similar in that they connect with players very well, especially due to sincere shared faith/beliefs that result in genuine trust and firm bonds with players and their families.

I'll leave it at that, but I do think it's fun to look back at viewpoints we had about similarly situated programs and analogize them to the current situation.

Part of the reason it feels worse is that ISU was bad when McDermott started and just kind of stayed at that same level of bad. ISU went from top 15 team to bottom of the Big 12 in Prohm's tenure so far.
