He'll be gone to a "better" program the first chance he gets. Zero loyalty.
I'm not saying he's completely loyal, but I think he'll be there for a while. If he can make it, Minnesota's a pretty good job. Minnesota's the flagship university, it's a good school, gorgeous campus, great stadium, and in a really cool city. And while I think posters on here overplay the Big 10 west's weaknesses, it isn't exactly the SEC West.

Plus, he is really big into his "Row the Boat" shtick, and Minnesota has really adopted that (too much imo). "Better" programs aren't going to let him do that

Agree to disagree. I think the second an Auburn or USC type offer comes, he gone.

Sure, I could see him potentially leaving if someone like USC called and were willing to let him do the whole RTB shtick, but that goes to my second point. I don't think he'll go if the program says "absolutely not" to RTB and I don't see programs like that letting him bring that (or at least not to the level that he wants)

But Row the Boat makes sense in the land of 10,000 lakes. Why did you row the boat? to get to the other side . . . . of the lake.

I don't disagree. My question is more, why haven't they already called? He took Minnesota to an 11-2 season with a marquee bowl victory. I know some of that was the schedule and some luck. I count four big-name program coaching hires in 2020: Florida State, Ole Miss, Washington, and Mississippi State. Is PJ loyal? Or did the phone just not ring?

Good question but not sure I see Ole Miss, Wash, Miss St. as big enough moves. He's a climber, and young. I'd think he wants a big next move.

Only Florida state and Washington could be a step up. Assuming money wouldn’t be better due to pac12 and ACC. They may also see a guy who may move again if he did move that soon from MN and want a more stable guy.

He's probably a good coach, but some posters went overboard with how great he was last year. They had some fortunate bounces early in the season and an overall soft schedule leading to an 11-2 year. I would take that in a heartbeat obviously.
Last year's Minnesota team was highly overrated. The Penn State win wasn't impressive to me. Penn State was overrated as well. Big 10 schedules are a joke. Which is why Iowa can pull off 9 wins a year.

Is it the team that has bought into the shtick? Or the fans? I never thought it would catch on with the fans. If it has, then I have another great reason to mock them.

Pretty easy to buy into a clown show when it comes with a season like last year. But yes, it is really shocking that people see this guy talk and think there is anything there.

Minnesota has taken advantage of some ridiculously soft schedules.

They've beaten 2 ranked teams the past four years and at times people have flipped out like they're actually good.

To put in perspective ISU under Campbell has beaten 7 ranked teams in that same time frame.

Not surprising. People on here were always raving about Jerry Kill when he almost never beat ranked teams. He just hardly played ranked teams.

So I’ll preface this by saying I probably don’t have the best sense of this because I’m not a Minnesota fan and don’t live in the twin cities. My experience with it comes from having two friends who went to Minnesota, being on campus twice (once for a wedding and once for the Wisconsin - Minnesota game) and paying more attention to the big ten than a lot of people here do. If people with more experience want to chime in, please do.

I definitely think the team has bought in (which makes sense, he recruited them). The university also has too. When I was on campus they had Minnesota oars in the book store, references to it on their uniforms/helmets, a fair amount of iconography around and in the stadium, and I think they even had something on the video board (similar to our “pump up the pasta” thing for basketball).

My sense is that on the whole the fan base goes along with it, but I don’t know that the enthusiasm is that deep. I’m sure some people that don’t like it, some that really do, but I think the majority have less loyalty to it. There’s buy in because it’s working, but that buy in will go away if it doesn’t. It’s like an over-the-top version of “trust the process.” Sure, people like it now, but it would get old if Campbell was failing.

I also think the vast majority recognize that it’s cheesy, but sometimes cheesy things can be fun. It’s like the emergency warning and sirens at Iowa state. They’re cheesy, but really fun

This was my experience living in MSP the last 5 years. Lots of people hated it at first. The local talk radio guys used to roast him all the time for his RTB crap. And the fact that he’ll talk for 20 minutes without ever actually saying anything of substance. They all got on board (excuse the pun) after last season. A lot of those same radio guys were saying “well, he clearly knows what he’s doing.” I’m sure they would flip right back if UM starts to go in the wrong direction.

I can't help I like the guy. I don't mind cheesy stuff. I'm 100% glad Campbell is our coach but I'd be happy with Fleck too.

A lot of the thing you say are true, but no one in Minnesota really gives a **** about the Gophers. They'll never have much fan support, and if you think winter in Des Moines is bad, spend one in Minneapolis.

TCF Bank has 11,000 fewer seats than Jack Trice, and we're the #2 program in a (considerably) less populated state. The U of M student body couldn't all fit inside of TCF Bank at one time. Here's the home attendance for 2019:

SDSU: 49,112 (lots of Jacks in attendance)
Georgia Southern: 41,021
Illinois: 39,341
Nebraska: 43,502
Maryland: 44,715
Penn State: 51,883 (Game Day)
Wisconsin: 53,756 (stadium was at least 1/3rd Badger fans)

Let's compare that to ISU
Northern Iowa: 61,500
Iowa: 61,500
ULM: 57,442
TCU: 59,552
OK State: 61,500
Texas: 58,946
KU: 58,210

Minnnesota's best attendance, which was largely comprised of visiting fans was 3,686 fans worse than ISU's worst attendance, which was in the middle of a strong rain and had almost no visiting fans in attendance.

Until Minnesota has consistent fan support, it will be hard for it to really be a great job.
