Pollard Details Recommended Cuts

The no fans isn’t going to be a big deal in the long run for the entire university but it could have a potentially big impact on the AD. If the AD goes away the school is going to be in for a rude awakening for how important it is.

I would have been 4th generation at one of the D3 schools but went to Iowa State because I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do and I wanted to go to a D1 school for the sports. My sister was the same way that’s sports/marching band made her decision. High schoolers particularly guys are not exactly complicated individuals.
I can honestly say that me taking my kids to ISU football games and getting them stuff to wear to the games is a big part of them solely considering ISU (the oldest two so far) as their only choice of college.

Probably because we've banned almost all large events, outside or in, severely limiting the chance for that to occur.

Oh, and if you looked at the seating chart they released, the 25k\40% seating plan didn't really allow for recommended levels social distancing. That was a big part of the problem. If community spread levels drop down to more reasonable levels i could see 15k\25% working out in October. But people are going to have to do what it takes to get those levels down.

Using what metric and at what level would you be comfortable.

I look at the $ I have spent for my 6 tickets for Football as a sunk cost. The cash is gone and it is not affecting my lifestyle. I am going to contribute what I paid for those tickets to NCC. It is $3,000, but every little bit helps! I might even give the NCC more to reflect that I am not going to be paying for 7-8 airplane trips from Florida to go to the football games this year.

If all footballs fans that feel strongly about football and can afford to contribute the 2020 ticket money, it will help cut the $30 million back down at least a little closer to the original $17.5 million.

I know JP pretty well and I think the only purpose of his letter today was to make sure every fan that has the resources to help, starts thinking in terms of what part of the solution are they going to be. If you don't think Wendy didn't sign off on the letter today then you don't know JP very well.

I would expect the future Hilton project to be delayed, but will be expanded to include CY Stephens. Just have to raise more money.

It is time to quit arguing about how this happened and who's fault it is, and concentrate how ISU, including the Athletic Department, can get through these trying times.

Virus spread outdoors is nearly non-existent. Masks would make it virtually impossible with the parameters ISU established.

If you have less income you must cut costs or find other sources of income. I don’t see a lot of other options. Maybe Earl May is running a sell on money trees but not likely. I doubt eliminating golf saves you much money. No good options for JP. The best option was to have fans at football games and put in place restrictions to minimize the risk of Covid.
I'm not doubting the financial issues Jamie is laying out.

I'm simply asking why all the options being considered weren't laid out in the letter. (I honestly don't know.)

As others have said, maybe the letter is an appeal for donations without explictedly asking for them.

I had a large event there just this past July. Absolutely felt safe, we suggested masks when social distancing couldn't take place. Stephens is so large and has so much space it accommodated all the competitors and parents with no worries. The event lasts 40 hours over a Fri -Sat - Sun weekend. We see about 1000-1500 competitors and parent/spectators over that long period of time. A transient crowd. It was about 90% normal and very safe with masks and distancing protocols being the biggest overall difference. Life and live events can still happen IMO if we use some common sense. But that is completely lacking in todays world and we're up against a cancel at all cost crusade. It is so difficult to navigate as a business owner.
One part that would concern me about CY- covid wise would be the number of handrails and I know that surfaces aren't nearly as concerning as air droplets. Just stating that.

Is there somewhere you can rent that is more "flat?" Somewhere like the old Seven Flags in Clive?

Yeah, surfaces aren't an issue really in terms of transmission. There are other venues, yes, but Stephens is an outstanding venue for these type events. And yes, I have been making phone calls all day as you can imagine, to look for alternative venues. This is been my life for the last 6 months....I put on 40 of these events across the country. Not a great business to own in a pandemic.

D1 schools would get screwed with no sports. Our entire academic system would be reworked.

As much as people like to pretend it isn’t the case how many people wouldn't have readjusted their college plans if sports didn’t factor in. I know I would have gone to a different school without sports being what they are.

Athletics meant less than zero in my choice to go to ISU.

While I plan to do some more, putting CY on the chopping block caused me to reconsider, for the time being. Just being honest. I hope to see Dr. Wintersteen address this at our Order of the Knoll virtual meeting.

Another classic case of clonedude not knowing all the details and assuming. Mismanaged by JP is not the case here. CY needs a lot of work to make it ADA compliant. A lot of those codes weren't in place when CY was built but if you start to modify or remodel CY, you aren't grandfathered in anymore and are required to upgrade everything to be ADA compliant. Once you start doing that then you need to meet the new building codes as well, its a chain reaction. That is a significant cost. The stage system also needs updated, that's very expensive. Plus, JP only took it over a year ago - can't blame not being up to code on him.

He's had a YEAR to fix a $50mm hole and he's FAILED to do that? Why is this bum still on campus???? :jimlad:

JP is the best thing to happen to ISU for so many reasons... Arbitrarily blaming someone who's been in charge for a year for decades and decades of mismanagement is BS.

Has this been proven true with all the large outdoor gatherings we've seen in the past few months? Not being argumentative, but I haven't seen any data that large outdoor gatherings have statistically increased community risk. If you have, can you please share that? I'd be interesting in reading it.

Here's a nice article on super spreader events. Crazy how so many of them came from indoor activities...

But you are discounting how valuable having sports, and more important successfull sports, is to the university in terms of enrollment numbers and overall name recognition of the university. Sports programs are worth FAR more than budget numbers in terms of advertising for your university.

Why do bragging rights factor so high? Providing a somewhat world-class education should have nothing to do with it. Ivy league sports mostly suck but those institutions are (overly) well-respected. What about all the D3 schools that offer phenomenal education opportunities?

Being the "biggest" insinuation sure doesn't make it the BEST institution. Another thread has shown ISU has plummeted in the college rankings and is the lower of AAU universities. I don't pretend to understand the nuance, but being bigger seems to have impacted our education rankings in a VERY bad way.

I appreciate Jamie's openness and transparency - its nice in a time like this (especially when you see how terribly the Big 10 botched this). But the letter reads like money should be placed above public health. ALL athletic departments are in trouble and will have to make deep, hurtful cuts.

That said, these ADs (all of them) got very fat and happy on all of this revenue and its crazy they have basically no reserves when something like this happens. So when you spend almost every last dollar you have each year, it doesn't give you many options. This is unprecedented but you can't tell me that an AD shouldn't have SOME reserves. (Note - this isn't about ISU, its about college athletics in general)
