I will be looking to purchase a different vehicle

Buy new. The dealers are pricing used to carry nearly the same price as new.

Used 2016 Ram with 80k miles was 27k. Brand New Ram 2018 was 30k after their extended cab discount of $5k.

Brand new Ram 2018? That's very old new stock. Also sounds like you are comparing different trim levels.

Chevy had a engine problem in the 2009-2013 area vehicles. (not sure of exact year and engine but was a 2.something four cylinder) Many have extended warranties on them to cover the issue. The rings go bad seize up and you burn oil. Can be very severe. Had a guy who owns a chevy dealership tell me about them and said they don't question much when you say they are burning oil and will OH the engine on Chevy's dime for you. I bought an equinox with the engine, waited a month, went back and said it was burning oil, and they scheduled the OH and there was no bill.

As a 25 year veteran in the auto industry, I can tell you that I've never seen anything like the current situation. When Covid first hit, the wholesale market absolutely tanked. Lasted about 2-3 weeks and then took off the other way. We are at a time of year when used car prices usually start softening as we head in to fall. Not this year. Dealers are still ridiculously low on inventory, and until the manufacturers can get their supply chains ramped back up, it will continue to add to the used vehicle shortage. I've seen countless reasonably clean used car and trucks in the 5-10 year old range with decent miles on them bring up to and even in excess of NADA retail in the wholesale auction ring. And that's not even counting the $300-400 in auction fees or whatever money is going to need to be spent on reconditioning. It's insane.

Probably panic buying on those dealers' part because (at least thus far) consumers have refused to accept the price increases. The only way they can make any money is if they can take a trade in for less than market value and then make some money on it.

Looking for a new vehicle. Looking for a SUV type. Test drove a 2013 Ford Edge and a 2012 Chevy Traverse today. Felt more comfortable in the Traverse. Anyone had a Traverse? Would you recommend?
we bought a Hyundai Palisade labor day last year and couldn't be happier with it honestly 18k mi so far. we looked at just about all the 3 row mid size SUVs and it was the best bang for the buck overall. the Traverse has had more then a few issues with electronics and transmissions on the latest version of it. and my co-worker is looking at replacing their '14 Traverse with less then 80k on it due to transmission issues potentially.
edit just saw you are looking used.... Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, Mazda Cx-5 all worth a look for the midsize 5-seaters from the early 10's. Chevy Equinox from '16+ I think on the redesign? parents have one and like it so far. if you want the mid/large size 3-row Explorer or even a early Durango, Mazda CX-9, basically any other over the Traverse/ GM re-badges.

Ha, all these ******* so insecure in themselves that they talk down about the Minivan.

ETA: We've been minivan owners for over 10 years. We had a 2008 Grand Caravan that we bought new and drove for 9 years / 120k miles. Never had a single problem with it. Traded it for a new 2018 Chrysler Pacifica about 16 months ago. We had the TCM crap out within 48hrs of taking delivery, making it undriveable. "Fortunately" it happened in our driveway so we weren't stranded anywhere. Fixed under warranty within a couple days. Also just had the radio replaced. It had been acting up since we bought it - randomly restarting - but I finally caught it acting up on video so they replaced that under warranty too. I loved our old van, but have been a little frustrated with the new one.

Fair warning but the FWD Traverse and Acadias are absolutely hot garbage in the winter. I didn't think it would be that big of a deal not having AWD but this winter finally broke me and we traded in our 2012 Acadia. If it was AWD we would still be driving it.
Tires honestly play a huge part that people underestimate. even with AWD our Palisade slid around on the Bridgestone Duelers it came with in the winter, swapped them for a set of Toyo All-Weather tires and holy **** is it a new car in winter...
I was thinking of starting a thread but I put here for now... we are soon to be in the market for a mini van :-(. As I understand there is Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Pacifica, and Toyota Sienna. Any and all feedback would be much appreciated. This is a total function over want vehicle for us, so quality and features are all that matters. No real concern for brand or actual look.
we looked at the Pacifica, and Sienna, but the fiancee was dead set on not driving a mini van:rolleyes::(:( and I still needed some towing capacity, so 3 row CUV :(, it is a great vehicle though still
We had a 2010 Traverse that gave us a lot of problems. Timing Chain was replaced, needed new A/C lines as well. All of this before it got to 100K miles. My wife got sick of the repairs so we got a Nissan Pathfinder. I liked the look and ride of the Traverse, but it was not reliable at all.
watch out for the CVT (if it's a newer one) in the Pathfinder. they have been known for issues across the Nissan line up.

Agreed. My parents drove their 9 y.o. Murano from IA to visit us in WA and had the CVT overheat both ways. No damage appears to have been done,, but it cut power on them with no warning while going across mountains. Couldn't go over 55mph while climbing. Once they pulled over and let it sit for a an hour, it reset and didn't give any problems until they went home and the exact same thing happened. The dealership recommended they install a trans cooler. They'd driven it clear to the coast a few years earlier for a combined family vacation with no issues.

It's crazy town out there in the car market. Wife was in the market for a different vehicle so we started shopping in May/June and I figured dealers would be screaming to make deals but nope.

If you wanted a new vehicle you had nothing to pick from. If you tried to go slightly used it was pointless because the dealers had little to nothing to pick from.

What's the outlook for the rest of the year? Should a buyer wait till December when dealers are desperate to just move anything to make year end numbers?

Thanks everyone for all the input. I'm not a vehicle expert. Been having my dad and brother help me out as well. When it comes to shopping for things I tend to be an impulse buyer and a vehicle isn't something you want to buy on impulse.

Bearded men should not drive a minivan.

Yep. I figured that out shortly after I bought mine. Mine is a 2016. A few months after I bought it used, I had to have the transmission cooler replaced because it was leaking. I was close to needing a new transmission, but things seemed ok after some testing.

Yep, there is pretty much no room for negotiation right now. They may throw you a few more bucks for your trade in but that's about it. Right now the dealerships are rolling with the "if you don't buy this car someone else will"approach.
