Meh, Vermillion is 400+ miles away from Sturgis and has a population of around 10,000 without students, plus they aren't on any major highway. I don't think they're going to be affected by the rally.

There will certainly be cross contamination. If I'm JP and looking at risk factors to minimize this would be a pretty easy decision.

I don't get it. Is there really a significant benefit to cancelling non-conference games? ...

... I doubt it has anything to do with safety protocols and suspect it has everything to do with TV contracts, but if so, why not at least try for a full schedule?

All conferences plus Big 12 with 10 games keeps conference champion with probable No Losses. With no blemishes (say 10-1 or 11-1), that team can still be in the running for national champ. I think THAT is the only reason they went with 10 game season.

Quite frankly, I think the season will get cancelled two weeks in when positivity rates skyrocket in all schools, elementary through college.

I see the U of Iowa has only 9 games in their 'conference only' schedule. Could it be that there are talks of allowing a 9+1 in the Big 10? If so, I think BOTH schools would benefit from the safety and financial gain to keep this in state rivalry going. It would require revision by the Big10. That would be difficult to come by, but I imagine that Iowa State would have fully researched the possibility before attending Monday's meeting.

It would be nice if we could play USD in week 1 or week 0

Take 2 weeks off

Bump the conference schedule up a week, evaluate how things are going.

Play Texas Tech in week 4 if the green light is given

I don't get it. Is there really a significant benefit to cancelling non-conference games? The article linked above didn't include any of the reasoning behind it. The only thing I've heard is that it is less risky to play conference teams because we know that they will be able to maintain a consistent level of testing, etc. to mitigate the risk.

First, I think this is overestimating how well the Big 12 teams will handle their own responsibility. What about Baylor makes us trust them?

Second, what makes us think that non-conference teams can't do as much as us to mitigate risk? Many of these schools have outstanding medical schools and facilities, some better than ours.

I just don't get it. There must be some other reason, especially when the Big 12 turns against its own rationale by letting schools keep one non-conference games. I doubt it has anything to do with safety protocols and suspect it has everything to do with TV contracts, but if so, why not at least try for a full schedule?

You get a two week buffer in case bad stuff happens.

Increasing the odds of a No Loss Season is a good reason that I hadn't thought about. However, a potential conference champion shouldn't be too worried about South Dakota, UNLV, and Ball State. But, the point makes sense for a conference that has top teams that do play high quality non-conference opponents. As a conference, there is a ton of money at stake with the Playoffs.

However, if "bad stuff happens," two open weeks on the schedule are probably not going to make much of a difference. If college football has to start cancelling games because of an active concern, it is hard for me to think that they won't shut the whole thing down.

With 250,000 expected to attend Sturgis I'm taking SD off the schedule if I'm JP.

Bet there's more than 250k, the 80th anniversary rally starts Friday. If y'all want me to run out and see what it's like, I'll take one for the team.

The 75th was nuts, I've gone 10 times and have never seen so many people/bikes. I've heard reports that some are going early or arriving late, may spread out the crowds some. At the same time, I saw carnival rides going up on Lazelle in some recent pics. Who knows? I called out to our campground (60 mi south of Sturgis) a few weeks back to check on local restrictions - it's like a different world based on what the owner told me. The only thing they shut down was the "burger barn," with no real local restrictions. He did say that some restaurants are still only doing curb side, but that was about it. And we're one state away. I'm very comfortable camping next week and will spend far less time in Sturgis than normal. Oh well, I guess I'll have to ride more. Note: I go to ride in the hills, don't care much for riding 700 miles to sit around in town. I'll also mask up and wash my hands thoroughly and often. And serve a 14 day "work from home" after I get back.

Side note, and only semi-related: one of my biker buddies and I will toast you repeatedly next week, as we have done (unintentionally) for years: TO BILL BRASKY!

The Big 10 released their schedule for all teams this morning, EIU has 10 conference games, their crossover games are Maryland, MSU, @OSU and @Penn. St.

Sounds like playing UNLV is not an option. Mountain West is not starting play until Sept 26. UNLV/ISU is scheduled for Sept 19. I know playing UNI has never been popular on this board but I do think it might make sense this year for our non conference game.
