Science can't say how much protection cloth masks offer. They know it is something. I have seen elderly folks and I am sure some that are compromised by obesity that are out and about and obviously believe a mask will prevent them 100% from contracting the virus.

Science tells us a lot of stuff that people ignore the hell out of. Don't eat lots of saturated fat, don't smoke, don't drive too fast or reckless, etc.

The maker of Lysol products was on CNBC back in March and he stated their studies showed that only 17% of people washed their hands after using the restroom. Talk about not following science!

Actually some very respected studies showed the benefit of a 2-ply Cotten mask is anywhere between 50 and 65% effective, and possibly higher if used properly. That’s a pretty darn good return and would immediately impact the R0.

Like I stated before, the virus doesn't give a rats rear who you are, or how it gets to you. It's not going to give a student in poli-sci a break because what they are doing is deemed "essential". You think 60k in the Jack, five times in a three month period is more dangerous than 30k students bumping shoulders every day.............for nine months?

the virus is less likely to cause problems for students who spend the majority of their time together in one community. Sure they travel but the bulk of their interactions once on campus will be mostly in Ames. Fans from all over the state meanwhile will come together, spread whatever Covid is endemic to their local area and then everybody goes back and spreads it to not college students but the elderly and vulnerable people they do business with in their own communities. (Also they could bring it to the college students but it seems we aren’t concerned about them). Ok, most people do fine. But according to CMS data released yesterday 1/3 of Medicare patients that got Covid were hospitalized and 1/4 of Medicare patients hospitalized ended up dying. That is a ton of people and what a large chunk of our small towns are made of. Even though young people may get no or mild “flu-like” symptoms those statistics are not typical for flu AT ALL. This is NOT the flu.

Fun Fact. Post 24 of this thread has around 10 negative reactions. Those same 10 posters are almost all of the people that are constantly saying things against the idea of some form of fans in the stadium for football.

While I've counted at least 36 different accounts have reacted positively towards my posts or posted support themselves about some or limited fans at JTS this fall. Not a single person has said we should fill JTS with 62K or whatever capacity is.

A vocal minority is just as loud as the more silent majority. Why is that?

I'd wager that none of those 10 or very few actually have season tickets in a normal season to football games

I gave post 24 a "useful" rating, as in I use the fact that someone who uses the term "fear porn" must be a complete tool.

Your implication that season ticket holders vs non-season ticket holders are in favor or against fans in the stands sounds like the ramblings of a lunatic.

It’s been a while since we’ve had an update on the number of positive cases. I’m curious how many we have out.

I disagreed because speaking from my experiences we didn't just interact with ISU students. We went down to Des Moines, up to UNI, over to Iowa City, and various other small colleges to interact with friends.

how many senior citizens did you regularly spend time with in college? I think that is the heart of it.

Title IX get's abolished and we really don't have a budget issue. That's the easiest way to make up for losses in revenue

Edit: I don't want this to happen nor do I think it will happen. Just saying we could really lean up the budget to cover lost football revenue

Title IX is a lot bigger and broader than sports Scholarships. If anything you might see conferences reduce the requirements for # of sports teams a school needs to field to allow cuts to men’s non-revenue sports and then the same # of women’s scholarships.

I’m not arguing that college students are going to follow any rules. I’m pointing out that they aren’t regularly having close contact with senior and vulnerable community members whereas fans that come from and go back to all their small towns definitely do. It’s one thing for Joe fan to disregard recommendations and stay in his community but it is a whole other level of risk to bring that same fan in to a large gathering with people from all over the region and then send them back to their community where they still won’t follow any recommendations.
 
I think the point is that senior citizens have been more susceptible, but that it is increasingly obvious that college age are NOT immune. And we are seeing more and more information about the damage this virus can do to the body. It's not just death. It's crippling damage to hearts, lungs, kidneys. Honestly I could see having the games with no fans in the stands, and classes taught online. IMO, both would be a good idea, but I'm kind of outnumbered.

I'm just getting more than a little tired of the cavalier attitude of some people. "I don't give a crap about anyone else, just make sure I can get drunk and watch football in JT this fall". If you are our future leaders, then we will be in just as bad a shape as we are right now.

Where do you think the older people get it from? This virus is an exponential spreader. College kid doesn’t have to give it directly to a Sr. The college kid gives it to another college kid who gives it to their parents who give it to a random person who lives with their older relatives. I don’t understand why this concept is that difficult.

i completely agree. I am not arguing any point about college students.
