I think we could be 5th it 6th.

I get these are all preseason rankings, so take them however you like, but if ISU is 5th or 6th in the conference, then theyre a top 30 team in the country.

luckily for us, preseason rankings don’t mean much.

Way up there
The top 4 of the league will be brutal, I'll believe Texas when I see it. I think they'll be in the next tier of teams, with OU, maybe Okie St but after the top 4/5 it could be wide open. If the top half is as good as predicted, being in the 6/7 range should get you in the tourney convo. IMO that's pry the ceiling with the roster as it sits now, that would mean, Harris gets a waiver, a couple fr and JJ are legit and the returning 4 guys all make modest strides. That is a lot to have happen but they don't have to be amazing, they just have to be better than TCU, KSU and one of the OK schools. Having 7/8 legit big 12 ready players would at least get us in the mix.

With the rosters currently as they are, it should be.

1. Baylor
2. Kansas
3. West Virginia
4. Texas Tech
5. Texas
6. Oklahoma
7. TCU
8. Oklahoma State
9. Iowa State
10. Kansas State

That is how it should look as of today, but the 5 to 10 is pretty close and could finish in any order IMO. Let's face it, ISU is coming of a 12 win season and resetting the roster, they need to earn the benefit of the doubt. (like they got in last year's preseason ranks)

I hate being the curmudgeon on cyclone hoops.

but my view is we have bottom 20% talent, and Prohm has yet to show he can overachieve.

going to need some big positive surprises this year, otherwise, I'm afraid we're DFL in the b12.

I think you might be jumping the gun just a little bit, and I understand why considering how bad we were last year. With that being said, we're bringing back the best pieces from last year's team (outside Halliburton), replacing them with better talent (Harris, JCL, Johnson), while also bringing in the highest rated recruiting class we've ever had.

It's certainly easy to believe JCL, Harris, and Johnson will be busts and our recruiting class will not pan out as expected, but I would actually be surprised if all of that would happen.

Not that Bart Torvik is gospel, but I thought his "spreads" were interesting --

The above does not really argue for any obvious "tiers" to me save for maybe ISU and TCU (at almost the same net ratings) and maybe KSU after that (only two points per 100 behind them). However, there is a large gap between those three and OSU around 4.5 points ahead of them, and they are likely to stay up there with the news that Cade Cunningham is going to play in Stillwater next year. This conference is absolutely loaded.

After that, it is pretty much a linear march of 2-3 points up to the next team. KU, BU, UT, and WVU all should have ambitions of winning the conference and making the Final Four next year. The top of the conference is absolutely stacked.

Finishing even #6 in the above is going to be... difficult. Overcoming even the Oklahoma schools is going to be quite the challenge for our roster.

By the way, BT says our defense is still going to suck...

You want to be as far as possible up and to the right on this chart. WVU projects as the best team in the conference because its defense prevents points (it is towards the top of the chart) and they project them to score a lot (to the right of the chart).

They project us with an average offense but an abysmal defense. KSU is the opposite of us with a good defense but terrible offense, and TCU is kind of lukewarm water in the middle of the two in merely being mediocre at both. Iowa State's offense and Kansas State's defense would only yield you Oklahoma, though. Neither is good.

Always informative info Sig... and I fully buy into the projection you laid out with that being the most likely outcome.

My optimism that ISU could move up to the top 6 line has involved the freshman and exceeding their current projections especially on defense. I am hopeful they can due to their athletic profiles and at least looking like having B12 quality size day 1 (an issue with last years class).

If some of the several newcomers improves the defense we are a better team.

I think we are going to score. We kept scoring with this lineup (somehow)...

Jackson
Bolton
Nixon
Jacobson
Young
---
Grill
Lewis
Conditt

It all really depends on us defending like a Big 12 team -- not a good one mind you. Just one who belongs in the conference. Just not like a Big Sky team.

Are any of the transfers known for their defense? It’s a bit unnerving to rely on freshmen for defensive improvement. But we were that bad last year, that simply long and athletic freshmen could improve it

Based on what?

Based on those two were really ******* bad -- it is a "nowhere to go but up" argument.

We are going to miss Tyrese on defense, though. :(

Getting better on defense after losing your best player on defense hurts.

This is why not landing Smith really stung... we need guys who play defense and rebound. Either to bring them in or manufacture them for us.

Blackwell and Foster would help us more if they frankly came in, D'd up, blocked a ton of shots, and pulled down a ton of rebounds instead of just chuckin' shots.
