College basketball (and basketball generally) has changed a lot more in the past few decades than baseball has. When has baseball had something so game-changing as the three-point line added to it...? There have been some things, like lowering the mound after the 1968 season, but has there been anything else?
Modern college basketball or modern Cyclone basketball? There is room for other definitions, but it’s reasonable to say the modern era of Cyclone basketball conventionally started during Orr’s time. The cultural and importance stemming from those days. Hoiberg’s connection to Orr in some ways strengthens that. Offense, suspect defense, small forwards like Elmer Robinson playing all over! Of course, we’re all getting old (nearly 3 decades since Orr!) so eventually it will sneak into a new era, but that generally is hard to delineate in real time.

I've stated prior our modern era started with JO but I'm teetering back and forth with the entrance of baggy shorts.

Correct. If it were, it's my belief that everyone since Barry Stevens would be chasing him as career ISU scoring leader.

My time at ISU overlapped a lot of Barry's. I remember him scoring two primary ways: 1) Long shots "REAALLLY deep" as he kept backing up and firing when they came out to get him. He was the definition of a hot shooter; 2) fast break dunks. I remember Billy Tubbs said something like, "All we saw was the seat of #35's shorts all night" when we beat them in Hilton with lots of transition buckets as Barry could really run the floor.

'Roids and juiced bats and balls.

Moneyball era has encouraged the Three True Outcomes to the point I think it's borderline ruining baseball.

A lot has happened honestly.

These (and the DH rule) are good additions.

Baseball has changed over time... but I still don't think as much as basketball.

I just choose to call Cyclone basketball "modern" starting with Hoiberg because the 2.5 coaching tenures before that were so eminently forgettable.

By the way... never understood it as "Three True Outcomes" only.

Getting hit by a pitch doesn't count...?

Moneyball was all about "a walk is as good as a single" and "he gets on base," well, then why not through drawing contact? I use to do that all the time when I was playing.

It hurt but it was effective.

Modern college basketball began with the expansion of the NCAA tournament to 64 teams in 1985. This was also the beginning of the modern era of ISU basketball. Johnny’s 5th team at ISU comprised of Jeff Hornacek, Barry Stevens and Jeff Grayer helped ISU make the tournament for the first time since the 40’s. The foundation was built at that point.

Actually, baseball has had significant changes to the game in the last decade, mainly from a pitching standpoint. No more complete games, starting the game with relief pitchers for an inning or two, set-up relief specialists along with closers, and 95+mph
flame throwers are now common place.

But then again, Smith doesn't play baseball.

I remember a ton of shots from the deep corner. He seemed to be money from there.

So do we know Smith's thoughts on the modern era? Barry Stevens? The DH rule?

Given that he and probably 75% of the board were not around or old enough to see or remember Stevens play he probably would not have much insight.

But if he can shoot the long ball like Barry, final 4 here we come. :)

Okay back on topic, when is this guy supposed to decide?

Decision is supposed to come by week’s end. ISU has a good shot at signing him.
