You are correct, I could care less if the kid was from Colorado, but he was not, now was he.

That makes all the difference in the world. So it does not bother you that ISU has only signed 4 of the top 5 in the state over the past 7 seasons, and Iowa has signed 13 of the them?

So Iowa does not have a lot of instate talent, well no kidding, and we are aren't getting a lot of what is here. The number point that at.

We are not charging up San Juan hill here, so there is nothing to die over. Just pointing out, we are getting our ass kicked on the instate recruiting trail, I for one would like to see that change.
Bill Snyder's press conference at K-State when he was hired: "we first have to dominate the state of Kansas in recruiting."

Do our 247 composite scores appear to be down in this class? Seems lower than past years at first glance

So this is absolutely the case, but it may not be because we are getting comparatively lower quality recruits. This might be either a fluke in the total talent pool available this year (seems unlikely to me) or (much more likely) 247 made some changes to their composite ratings. Let me explain.

I did a quick year by year comparison of recruit rankings and ratings on 247 for 2020 and 2021. Here's what we've got:

Class of 2020
Player Rank - Composite Rating
200 - .9210
400 - .8871
600 - .8713
800 - .8618
1000 - .8538
1200 - .8473

Class of 2021
Player Rank - Composite Rating
200 - .9229
400 - .8789
600 - .8627
800 - .8477
1000 - .8416
1200 - .8215

So what we're seeing is that thought the player ranked at #200 in the nation in 2021 has a slightly higher composite rating in 2021, all other player ranks reviewed have lower composite ratings as compared to the same player rank of the prior year.

Difference between 2020 and 2021
200: .0019
400: -.0082
600: -.0086
800 : -.0141
1000: -.0122
1200: -.0258

Not only are the player composite ratings getting lower year over year, it is an accelerating trend as you move down the charts. This would impact Iowa State substantially more then, say, Alabama, as the average ISU recruit is probably ranked somewhere in the 800-1000 range.

2020 ISU composite rating was .8525
2021 ISU composite rating is .8376
Difference is -.0149

That difference is about the same as the difference in composite ratings for players in the 800-1000 range.

So, in summary, I don't think we are necessarily seeing a weaker class this year by just looking at the composite ratings. I think our overall player rankings are likely averaging close to the same as the last couple years, but we just have something really funky going on with the 247 composite rankings this year.

Our best QB in school history was unranked after his senior year
I agree that Campbell has a great eye for finding lower ranking recruits that exceed their ranking by the time they are done playing. That’s huge for a program like ISU and will allow us to get 7-8 wins, and overachieve when you compare recruiting team rankings versus #of wins. But to take the next step to 10 wins, we need more 4* players.

Wouldn’t you agree that typically recruiting team rankings correlate well with # of wins?

And how did this thread about an exciting young prospect go so far off the rails? Kid has a great story and put up incredible numbers. Reminds me of JJ Moses or Jarvis West. I will say that 5'8" he is listed at is a real stretch though!
This guy?

Not to change the subject but I just saw that the Iowa recruit from Ida Grove got one of the largest ranking bumps I have ever seen. A couple of weeks ago he was like the 16th rated recruit in the state. He commits to Iowa with zero, that is right, zero other FBS offers. Not power 5 but no other FBS offers. How does that happen?

Look at Brock Purdy then. Or Tarique Milton. Or Anthony Johnson. Or Tayvonn Kyle. Or Datrone Young. Or Zach Petersen. Or Jake Hummel. Or BREECE FREAKING HALL...

I'm leaving out a lot of dudes, but all were two stars or unranked when they committed.
Thinking your wrong about Breece Hall being a 2 star when he committed

1.) This is an incredible write up and insight.

2.) I appreciate you not calling me a hawk troll for posing a question for those more knowledgeable than me in our recruiting class.

Great stuff man

Not impressed with this class at all.
Have you not been paying attention to how Matt Campbell and Co. put classes together? Man basketball transfer recruiting is making everyone stupid. This kid would be one of the fastest players on our team this year. He will be a stud.

Then why did we lose by 30 to Notre Dame? Or why can’t we get past 7-8 wins? Stars matter is all I’m saying.

It’s a bowl game. Calm down. Most teams lose to Notre Dame by 30.

If you guys can’t see Deon’s talent from his insane tape, I can’t help you.
