Friday OT #2 - All The TP

We normally keep a ridiculous amount of toilet paper on hand, but we are coming up to our normal supply run. our timing is not ideal.

I didn't necessarily stock up on anything, but I made sure we have enough frozen and canned veggies and fruit in case transportation gets affected.

Can someone explain to me why people are hording toliet paper? I just don't get the reason for toliet paper. Maybe canned goods, but toliet paper?

I'm running under the assumption that one dude, somewhere out there, panicked and announced to the world that he was going to buy all the toilet paper, and it waterfalled from there.

Self check outs are hard to police unless they have store personnel in place, if you place limits on items. I would think TP wouldn't be to hard to limit. Hy-Vee in Ames had sign up for that, but the shelves were empty.

I used to work at Wal-Mart in high school in very late 90s/early 00s (so, before self check out). There was a thing where people could only buy two cans of baby formula at the time - the register would warn us (like it does for cigarettes and stuff) that you can only get two, and then would physically not let us scan anymore. I'd think they'd be able to do something like that?

I’m with Janny. I also got turkey spam which sounds horrible.

YOU ARE NOT HELPING ME.

I am guessing at this point that people are just buying it because they're afraid all of the doomsday people are going to buy it all if they don't, and they'll have to wipe their butts with socks by next week.

I bought a little bit more than I normally do at the grocery store last sunday (with a little bit of focus on non-perishables), but nothing extreme. I've got about a weeks worth of regular food, then my hurricane kit / camping box has probably about a weeks worth of food in it as well (freeze dried, ramen, spam, nuts, etc).

Stopped by Kroger last night just to see how crazy it would be. Store was definitely picked over, but not horribly. Even with all the checkers going, line was absolutely ridiculous. I've seen worse after hurricane Gustav when I lived in New Orleans.

I think the only good thing is that once everyone hopefully gets over their panic buying this week, the stores will maybe return to normal in the next two weeks? It's not like a natural disaster where we have no power or there are major supply chain disruptions. Going to be a lot of minor-medium inconveniences, but we aren't all going to be underneath 8' of water waiting for rescue and then stuffed into a high school gym.

People think everything is manufactured in China these days.

Hmmm....

Good question.
Probably the same reason the military puts T.P. in every MRE (Meal Ready to Eat)

What goes in must come out.

If you are ordered to stay in your house, what are you going to do if you run out?

One solution. Take a shower. Takes care of the no TP problem and also the washing of hand problem at the same time.

Speaking of MRE's. If we get to the point where the National Guard is throwing MRE's off the back of a deuce and a half to keep us fed, this ad hoc training film my help all you civilians know how to properly deploy the included "John Wayne toilet paper."

I'll admit that when I first read the thread title I thought it was "All the Tip" (instead of the ever-popular "just the tip")

It had a very "Angie's-word-play" vibe to it.

My local store was out of sanitizer, TP, and ground beef of all things. Not out of lube, yet, but I put a big dent there.

Had my regular hyvee online order for today.

They were out of about 1/4 of the things in the order, including TP and bread.

Luckily i'm good for a bit here, hopefully the supply catches up within a week or so

I shall neither confirm nor deny. Nor shall I say if I originally had "Just the TP" and then reconsidered.

At Janny's suggestion, we got some staples yesterday. (We'd had them previously and never restocked after a massive purge this past fall.) I figured it wasn't a terrible idea, just in case something happens like - does anyone remember when the Ames Public Library was out of the old Hastings building for a while, and had to close because everyone who worked or visited was getting diarrhea, and they had to clean? If something like that happens at grocery stores, it's not a bad idea to just have some stuff.

I don't cook and hate grocery shopping, so I was wandering through the aisles yesterday at lunch considering what we could actually eventually eat. I looked at canned tuna and gravy and thought, "Well, I guess those would have protein and could help us avoid anemia... but that's dumb and never going to happen," and walked by. I got to the canned pineapple and thought, "That could prevent scurvy... WHICH WE AREN'T GOING TO GET because we're not F****** SAILORS," and didn't buy it.

...Guess what three items @Mr Janny came home bearing after a separate trip to the store last night (without having heard my internal monologue), and for what reasons?
TP, wine and condoms?

Our HyVee has been out of hand sanitizer since last Wednesday, the 4th.

Got TP today because the natural order of things was that we only had 2 1/2 rolls left in the house. Also picked up some things so that we could actually cook at home.

My wife made her weekly trip to Fareway yesterday. She picked up some TP only because I have a colonoscopy scheduled soon.

I did buy a package of 4 rolls of TP the other day...but also I'm getting low anyway. I don't if I'm missing something, but 3 weeks' worth of TP isn't that much for me?

Otherwise I bought a bunch of oatmeal the other day and have a big bin of it as well. Also I have a bunch of trail mix if normal stuff is out.

I actually need some dish soap so gonna go be the guy standing in a huge line with like 3 things.
