I actually cheered.. by myself.. when JoJo won best adapted. It gave me a little sliver of hope that, hey, maybe this little tortoise could win the race. But once Bong Joon-Ho started raking them in I knew it was over.

Parasite was great, and totally deserved all the acclaim and recognition it got, but I'll be damned if JoJo wasn't just a masterful work of balancing humor, societal issues, raw emotion, and beautiful cinematography.

I forced the wife to watch it with me on Friday night because I knew she would enjoy it and while re-watching I was struck by the beauty of the shots. The color. The headspace. The camera work's inconsistency. Everything. I loved everything about it even more the second time. That is all.

/love for JoJo/Taika rant

I fully believe that you can have one movie be the best movie if the year but a completely different movie be your favorite.

Parasite to me was the best made movie of the year. Hands down. Artistically amazing. Visually stunning. It is something you’ve never seen before and it deserves all the awards. But Jojo was my favorite movie of the year personally. A little movie that was hilarious and sad and also something I’d not seen before.

I didn't watch much and agree although I'm not sure if the preaching is really that new.
You are right. It isn't new - but it's at a point that it engulfs the ENTIRE show. I will gladly sit down and have a conversation with a person with another view point & will listen to all sorts of arguments from many different perspectives - even those that are radical. In order to understand people it is important to be willing to listen to them. The problem with much of Hollywood (and many of their Social Media "Militants") is that they rarely listen to views that may be different than their own (talk about "intolerance") and are quick to "cancel" those who have dared to make mistakes in their past. I, ashamedly, made derogatory comments about certain groups when I was a teen (living in an all-white community) without EVER having met a person from said groups. It was actually my time at Iowa State University where I learned about the diversity of people and began to understand that people have inherent dignity, deserve my respect and that I should NEVER degrade or demean them. I am not perfect, but I certainly feel like I have greatly matured in that area. I'm sure Kevin Hart would also agree, but the "woke" Hollywood culture "cancelled" him & we never got to see his interesting spin on being the Oscars host.

Parasite cleaning up thrilled me. Incredible film. Jojo winning adapted made my night. Pitt winning was awesome.

Onto 2021. Movies to watch for. Some not all:

Mank (Fincher)
French Dispatch (Wes Anderson)
Ammonite
Nomadland
Hillbilly Elegy
Tenet (Nolan)

Hillbilly Elegy is going to be a movie?!

Was there anything in Joaquin's speech that was inherently offensive? It seems like everything he said was simply following the golden rule. Frankly I don't see how a Christian could disagree with anything he said. A little crazy at times in his delivery but it's all just the golden rule.

Zellweger was rambling and seemed to struggle to hold it together but she was actually trying to make a point that as a divided nation our heroes are something that can bring us together.

The moment where the three female action stars gave best score to a woman and introduced the first woman conductor seemed overly staged to the point where it was hammy. Would have been better to just have a typical nomination and let the woman receive her award.

Martin and Rock didn't say anything that should have offended any reasonable person.

I guess I don't get what the big outrage is. Liberal people are attracted to the arts, journalism and education. Conservative people are attracted to things like business, law and law enforcement...the FBI/CIA and much of the legal system is always going to be full of conservative minded people, Robert Mueller is a conservative, James Comey is a conservative, etc.

The question is can people hold their views in their field without being offensive and insulting. Our national leadership at the highest level fails at this right now much more than these actors do.

Good art says something. It's rare for publicly funded art to be great because it can rarely say something meaningful. It's a contradiction to reward artists for great art and then ask them to turn off the conviction suddenly.

The idea of an industry rewarding itself in the first place is actually the most logical thing to criticize. It's kind of incestuous at the core. Artists are artists though.

Hillbilly Elegy and Nomadland (starring Frances McDormand and David Strathairn) are the two I personally think are worth watching out for as dark horses given the state of the country. If you haven't read these books (both true stories) get on it.

Agree that this wacko lecturing the hollywood suits about the horrors of dairy cattle artificial insemination was golden.

Also, it's two years away, but I'm calling Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon as the one to beat for 2022. Talk about a book that he was born to adapt into a movie. Add in DiCaprio and DeNiro. Gold mine. Also a true story (book) that if you haven't read it GET ON IT.

Agree. 'JoJo Rabbit', 'Whiplash', 'Room', all recent examples of my favorites that didn't win best picture, and I was ok with it.

I can't think of the last time my favorite movie in a given year won Best Picture. Maybe No Country for Old Men.

The dairy stuff was pretty offensive and insulting imo, like he's an expert on two PETA youtube videos.

Yeah I can see that. I was less comfortable with that part than the rest but really most of what he said should not be political and everyone should agree.

I get general fatigue of award shows, not a lot of the specific anger. If nobody could be slightly hypocritical and still work to make the world better we'd get nowhere.

I didn't watch it but was it even necessary at all?

I used to feed cats on my farm with leftover milk when the machines shut off....did I ruin dairy?

Doesn't like AI but clearly has no clue how bull breeding works. Seemed odd with the rest which I agree with hfcs shouldn't be controversial. Also kind of offensive to sort of equalize gender issues and racism with his view of animal rights. Oh well he's also against wool and fishing so he's definitely more out there than most.

The thing that I find offensive is that he was generic in his explanation of what he doesn’t like about dairy industry and with his baited use of key hot button words he likely made a lot of people that like (or love) his movies blindly agree with what he said without even giving it a thought or giving an ounce of their time to do any kind of research on the subject.

Agree on all accounts. Again, don't mean to take anything away from Parasite and what Joon-Ho did. Unbelievable work and I thought that movie was fantastic as well. Just wanted to say may part about JoJo after watching it again haha. Although, it seems like it has a pretty strong fan base on here already
