Random Thoughts 14: I can see clearly now 2020 edition

I thought about investing some funds in a 9 month CD just to see the results of the election and what happens to the stock market afterward.
Or buy a 46 acre farm in Arkansas, get out of the tech business, raise chickens, open a vegetable stand in the summer and start writing my manifesto.

Be sure to stock up on bib overalls and straw hats.

I had thought about doing that too, not a bad idea. Home buying we did time well so our interest rate is pretty nice so not a huge gain on that end. Outside of time, of course.

Thought about this a little more (investments, accounting maneuvers, business strategic planning is my default modes so when I have dead time or am laying in bed in the morning its what hits me). An idea, if there is a portion you don't need for several years like 2K or so. Take that and invest it in a couple different mutual funds, it will be a learning tool. Long term growth will have low dividends so out of pocket taxes will be light. A balanced fund or income fund will have higher dividend rates (typically 3-4%) but if you reinvest (which is what I would do) you would pay taxes on that portion. Or you could take the cash out and that make it feel safer to you since it would "return" your principal to you over a 15-20 year timeframe and still have an equal level of growth as dividends.

A lot of people focus hard on fees, I focus on strict returns. Outside of the upfront fees, the rates that funds show are net returns. A 0.9% operating fee versus a 0.45% fee is not something to be afraid of if the returns are 11% and 10% respectively. You still gained and extra percent even though the fees was almost half percent more. There are several different classes of mutual funds, the main one used is A shares. They take a % of your money upfront at investment and you have to recoup that. I have used C Shares for things under 7 years or to build some funds up to the next level. There is no load fee if you hold it in there for a year, but the operating fees are higher. Sometimes the operating fees aren't large enough to offset the load fee until past year ten, so that is something to look at. Nice thing is, if you figure you only want two years, they don't take 2-6% of it upfront. Unless you have a million to drop, then there is no upfront fee to A's.

My first thought was obviously about the office

Did they announce that it was JLo's daughter singing with her (when she had the US/PR boa flag thing on)? I did not know that until now.

Only seen about 2-3 episodes of the office and about half of the movie office space. I didn't find either entertaining. Might be that I didn't watch the office from the beginning.
It’s an acquired taste but is pretty damn funny if you give a shot and let the characters grow on you. It took a pretty big nose dive the last 2 to 3 seasons though.

I always viewed The Office as a comedy similar to Seinfeld - a group of people who think they're smart, when in fact their ignorance is the joke. It took me awhile, too....but eventually I got it.

Not to dig too deep, but you go to a rally with a lot of supporters of a person, group, idea, or what have you and you insult and bad mouth that particular person or thing; be prepared to not have a warm welcome. I'm not a Trump fan or supporter, but I would expect this type of response from most any group when their side gets talked about like this. Dude needs to take a different approach.

Damnit I meant to post that in the Caucus thread My mistake all

This may border on the political, but I think we can handle it in here. There is a reddit post of a little scene from a caucus in NE Iowa. I am proud that my sister is the person who is very politely dealing with a woman who was upset and wanted her card back because after voting for Mayor Pete after she discovered that he was married to a spouse of the same sex. I'm not trying to voice support for any candidate, nor to delve into the religious beliefs of anyone--I'm just proud of my sis. Cool story Bro, I know. It is just not every day that I open a thread in the cave and see video of my sister and my nephew.

Paid the first of the three payments for the kids U Bill last weeks. Reminds me that I should round up the funds for that. Go see how many refundable cans we have. 5 cents a can, means 20 cans per dollar. Hopefully we have the 120 cans out in the garage for that. I like this years scholarships, next year will stink. Then the year after that will be two kids and I will just ball up and cry monthly.

I kind of figured that as we usually do a pretty good job of keeping the politics out of RTT

It's not like he kept it a secret.
