Why No Post Offense

I think that is the biggest thing along with playing a different position. Last year when there are 4 offensive weapons surrounding him he was getting a lot of great looks and teams didn't bother helping down on him. I think Jacobson and Conditt should be the main 5s and Young should just sit unless they need a stronger body to try and defend someone.
Yup he is well suited for a role where he is the 4th or 5th option and just has to be ready for a dish, get a rebound and put back or gets good 1 on 1 matchups in the post. He really isn't a shot creator on his own. I think he isn't any different of a player than last year he just is being asked to do stuff he is not capable of. BTW this is not me trying to bring him down or bag on him. He works hard and is a great Cyclone and in the right situation is very effective.

They just had a piece on ESPN about this in the NBA, post touches are down overall, they are a dying part of the game. It gets covered up by the idea that big players are more skilled today but in reality, they are less skilled. Post moves take more practice and coaching that shooting and dribbling. It gets talked about over and over again but club ball, aau etc...aren't typically coached by great coaches. People who don't know the fundamentals of post play are the ones teaching young kids the game.
I agree that a lot post players don't know what to do when they get the ball. Painful to watch at times as I grew up in an era where post guys had lots of moves, jump hooks, baseline jumpers, head fakes, step unders etc. It's pretty much all about the drive and dish now days.

I agree that isn't helping the situation but he looks like a different player this year. Peculiar to say to the least.

I think Prohm is coaching it correctly. Here me out please before the daggers come flying. We all see this season is going to be exactly what it is right now. A struggle. Prohm can put a senior out there who is going to get beat, or he can put Zion out there. Zion in my opinion just needs experience. He has talent but has lost confidence. Confidence will come with repetition. Prohm is playing Zion because Zion needs the experience. What is the worst thing that will happen? We lose? OK. Our 4 position gets beat again? OK. So you want to try to develop the 4 spot with an athlete who will be gone next year or an athlete that will hopefully through experience fill the position better next year?

Speaking of stepping up, have we heard why lewis didn't play Saturday? I thought he played pretty well in the games leading up, even though others didn't.

i think Jacobson should sit if it’s gunna be anyone. Solo has a better mid range and post game. And he’s stronger against big 12 posts he can shoot the 3 better too.

Has Jacobson regressed or is he being asked to do things outside of the scope of his ability? I lean towards the latter. He is an undersized 5 who benefited from having a lot of talent around him last year. Now, that coaches have scouted and built gameplans for him, we are seeing a much more realistic version of who Jacobson is.

I think it's hard to say MJ regressed. Instead, he's playing a different position with a VERY different role. He's not as good at that position/role. Unfortunately for him, I think that's gonna leave him getting fewer and fewer minutes. Maybe, just maybe, Prohm will try to move him back to the 5 and possibly take some of SY's minutes (because GC is probably just gonna keep getting more minutes).

Maybe replace Zion with Tre Jackson in this post.

Something I liked last night was CSP stuck with what was working with that line up.
CSP's coaching in multiple facets was different last night, but it was all overshadowed by the loss to a banked half-court shot (albeit on a great setup by Dixon). He noticeably changed what he's trying. Some of the play executions were different (went back to trying to guard weave on offense quite a bit) as well as finding a set of players that worked best and letting them run with it. Also was less TO's killing our own momentum.

The most glaring problem still, though, is the team's awful switching defense and over-helping leaving the perimeter open on kick-outs.

Jacboson is better than Solo outside of boyding up huge bigs. Just look at last year. Young will never have a year like that. He also is a really poor rebounder for a big. Young cannot shoot the 3 better than Jacobson.

We will see if this happens but I just heard of a interesting lineup wrinkle that has been worked on in practice with good results. Person was actually surprised it wasn't used on Saturday but hopefully it gets shown Weds.

If it is I think people will like it.

Yup...giving up 52% on 3pt FGs is a tough nut to overcome. If ISU could have even played just reasonable 3pt defense, they get a comfortable win on Saturday.

We won’t know solo doesn’t have the guards Jacobson did last year.. and outside of 4 shot fakes and then going up with the shot what post game has Jacobson shown?

really? You don’t avg 13ppg in big 12 in the post if you aren’t skilled.. Two things:

1- 3pt line moving back badly affected MJ
2- MJ played the 5 last year and this year is on the wing playing the 4 and playing completely out of position..

that’s why

Well Jacobson averaged 13ppg in the big 12 as a post and he isn’t skilled at the position. People were complaining the entire time that lard or conditt shoulda been on the floor instead. Becuase to stay on the floor the entire game his defense was jumping out of the way with his hands up.

Get position on the block, then a quick, subtle forearm to the chest to create a little room with the non-shooting arm, maybe one or two dribbles, followed by a short jump hook...nearly automatic...if it is drilled and practiced against another big body.

Instead, it seems so many posts start dribbling and trying to back the defender even closer to the hoop for what amounts to a layup. That that takes too much time and allows guards to check down and harass the dribble and obstruct any kickout. If you've got the block, you are basically within 6 ft of the hoop.

It seems like it is up to the college coaches to develop these moves in the kids playing post, but most just don't want to do it.
