ND practices have been awful

Just passing along what we are hearing in the ND boards...

ND has looked absolutely awful in practices leading up to the game. I expect the defense to play well, but the loss of OC Chip Long seems like it may very well come into play.

After everything that I’ve learned about Iowa State over the past couple of weeks or so, I do not feel particularly good about the game. If the Iowa State OL can protect Purdy, and I think that that they’ll do enough, it does not bode well for ND.

I think that this is a game that ND should win, but I don’t see any evidence right now that ND is going to play well. I picked Iowa State to win 27-24 on the ND boards. I hope that I’m wrong.

I can tell you're new here.. I won't think Iowa State is going to win until the final clock hits zero, the coaches meet in the middle of the field, and the referees run to the tunnel.

It seemed really odd to me when Notre Dame let go of their coordinator. There must have been something really bad to let go of the coordinator prior to the bowl game without having a back up plan. Additionally, they have a relatively young person (27 years) essentially learning on the job. While he may have a great offensive mind, it still takes some experience in just being a manger.

If Brock Purdy can step in to his throws along with decent offensive line blocking, then I don't think Notre Dame has a chance. Our best drives this season were when Purdy was stepping in to his throws and not throwing off his back foot. Additionally, if the defense can hit the right tackling angles and maintain good containment of the pocket, we should be in great position. Again, I don't think this team has played to its max potential all season for a full four quarters.

I mentioned the ND situation with their OC and what happened in another thread. In a nutshell...

Chip Long is an excellent OC but a massive jerk. ND lost their OL coach to the Chicago Bears a couple of years ago, and Brian Kelly hired his buddy Jeff Quinn as a replacement, over Chip Long’s objections.

ND’s OL is now incredibly average/underachieving, and Chip Long (rightfully) blames Jeff Quinn. Chip Long lost his marbles after spending the entire year inventing ways to run the football since ND can’t do so conventionally, and Brian Kelly doesn’t want to get rid of his buddy, so Long gets booted instead.

Brian Kelly is a huge fan of nepotism, and auditioning Tommy Rees to be the next OC in the bowl game despite Rees only being a coach for a few years is Brian Kelly being Brian Kelly.

He’s been throwing off his back foot all year, and he’s considered one of the top QBs out there. Why would he start stepping into throws now? :D

Seems like the bears could’ve done a much better job with that hire.... their OL has been pitiful.

Maybe, but it has only been two years. You could argue that Hiestand coaches the best LT (Ronnie Stanley) and the two best guards (Quentin Nelson and Zach Martin) in the NFL right now.
