He won a meaningless tournament and lost in the one that matters immediately after that to a terrible Ohio State team. Seriously, what makes you think the program is in good shape?
That terrible Ohio State team is now arguably the best team in the country. They brought back everyone and added a few good players. They were absolutely not terrible last year.

You may not know this, but almost the entire team Prohm's first year had to get re-recruited by Prohm in order stay at Iowa State. Some guys wanted to head to the league, while some wanted to possibly transfer. Prohm got them to stay. Prohm also added Donovon Jackson and Solomon young, who helped immensely during the 2016-2017 season. Also, Deonte and NWB never played a minute under Fred and developed into very nice players.
So how has he done with the teams that were comprised of only guys he's recruited?

Oh idk. Won a Big 12 tournament title and got a 6 seed to the NCAA tournament, a tournament that is unpredictable and if you don't play well you'll lose, like Fred's team his last year that lost to a much worse UAB squad?

So you're good with one NCAA tournament in 3 years (assuming this year's team doesn't make it), and getting bounced in the first round in that one year?

So your whole defense for Prohm as the solution for the future is that his team got hot and won 3 games in 3 days?
The NCAA tournament is essentially the same thing.. Mini 4 team tournaments where you play two games in three days and the hottest team usually moves onto the next mini 4 team tournament where you play two games in three days.

You said the expectations going into last year were too low for ISU because people didn't realize how good Jacobson and Shayok were.

They were 8 and 6 ppg guys at their previous stops. Not sure why anyone would've expected Shayok or Jacobson to do what they did last year, because there wasn't really an indication they were those types of players.

People keep saying we shouldn't judge last season vs. preseason expectations because they were too low. Why would the expectations have been higher than a 6 seed? You had two injury prone role players in NWB and Young alongside two talented but wildly inconsistent freshman (LW and Lard) returning from a really bad team. Then you are adding in a freshman ranked about 50-ish in THT (ranked similarly to Matt Thomas, who struggled mightily as a freshman), a role player from a good team (Shayok) and a role player from a bad team (MJ). Then you have two freshmen that are decently ranked in Conditt and Griffin, and one low-ranked Freshman in Haliburton.

My problem is in the same thread we can have people claiming Prohm horribly mismanaged Wigginton, who's probably going to be a G-League/overseas lifer that was an efficient scorer and conf. 6th man of the year as a soph. while giving Prohm no credit for having Shayok go from an 8 ppg role player to an All-American. Or having MJ go from a 6 and 5 kind of role player to a double-digit scorer that was huge in the big 12 tournament.
In reference to what you said about Shayok, a lot of people, including myself, had actually seen Shayok play before he transferred to ISU. A lot of us, knew what he was capable of and a lot of us even said before last season that Shayok would be our top scorer or second scorer behind Wigginton. Virginia runs a defensive scheme and their offense revolves around running the shot clock down before shooting which is why he only averaged 8 points per game. Bennett is a great coach, but his teams are atrocious to watch most of the time because of his low scoring/defensive schemes. It wins games, but is not fun to watch and his players don’t fill the stat sheet because of this. Shayok was clearly the best offensive player they had his junior year, especially if you watched them in the NCAA tournament that year. People who watch teams other than ISU knew Shayok was, and quite frankly, expected him to score like he did. His clutch factor however was a huge surprise and without Shayok last season, that team doesn’t play in the NCAA and for sure doesn’t win the Big 12 tournament. He, on my opinion, is 1a or 1b as far as transfers go that have come to ISU along with DeAndre Kane.

I'd be concerned if it extended into next year but I missed when they had the selection show for this year? There are still plenty of games to right the ship. We haven't lost to a bad team yet, and sure we definitely need to play better than we have but to say that this season is over would be disrespectful.

No, it really doesn't. What makes you optimistic for the future under Prohm?

Should we still not be excited about Brock Purdy? @goody2012

Hate to be a debby-downer, but why is this such a big deal? He had little to no offers previously and his value is over-inflated right now due to lack of options. This isn't a come in right away and start kind of guy.

So only wins are fluky if that fits your subjective narrative? OK

Three wins (against familiar opponents in a familiar venue with familiar refs) are somehow more of a fluke than one loss (against a random opponent from a different conference, in a weird venue, with weird refs, at a weird time of day).

Lol okay.

I see, so the issue is I'm too optimistic to think that ISU basketball is better than 1 NCAA tourney in 3 years.

This season isn't over. And have you ever met this guy?

We were 0/6 when I was on campus in Ames.

Even our current level of prosperity, as mediocre or unsatisfying as you seem to think it is, is far from guaranteed. I've seen things you people wouldn't believe.

I'm not saying we were a game or two away from the tournament, I'm saying we were a game or two away from the year not being as bad. You can have a year like that every once in a while, especially after losing a ton of contributors from the year prior.. And look, the year after that, we win the Big 12 Tournament and are a 6 seed in the NCAA tournament. Lon Kruger and the Sooners went 11-20 in 2016-2017 and then followed it up with a first round exit the next year.

Kruger went to the Final 4 the year before his rebuild.
