I can honestly say I've never done any sports betting. I've done fantasy sports, and some FanDuel type stuff but that is about it.

So this is probably a dumb question. Would something like this be an even money bet? or do they put odds on this? I really should look into it some, It is something I have always had some interest in but not enough to really get into the betting lines and payouts etc.
Anyone got any good sites to check out and see how all the pay structures etc work?

If you live in Iowa you can bet legally but need to deposit at one of the casinos. You can bet on a Team to actually win the game (no point spread) and then you get odds. The other option is to bet on the point spread. I would Google some basic betting fundamentals before putting a dime on anything so that that can be explained to you.

As for this game you can bet on Iowa State to cover a three point spread but it isnt even money bet. You would have to bet $115 to win 100 if you took Iowa State to win by three. If you want to bet on Iowa State just to win the game you’d have to bet $150 to win 100. It’s a little complicated for explanation here so I would suggest you do some research. A game that is considered dead even is not an even money bet because the casino gets their 10%.

Bets against the spread are even money plus the juice, which is essentially a fee the casino charges. It's usually 10%. You will usually see this listed as -110, which means you need to bet $110 to win a 100. Sometimes you will see books adjust the juice on certain bets to entice people to take one side or the other.

Thanks, at least that gives me a little idea, not sure I will do any or much, just an interest. I had some fun on FanDuel before they blocked it in Iowa. Used to like the small daily and weekly stuff.
I have learned to avoid gambling as much as possible, because I have a hard time knowing when to quit. Ive had some pretty big swings a few times and walked out thinking how much of an idiot I was.
But I would like to at least know more about all the ins and out of sports bets.

Most of the money is on ISU because supposedly Iowa State opened +3.5, then went all the way to -3. This would imply the sharp bettors, or pros like Iowa State getting points.

I think there is a lot of current pros on Baylor, but they are missing the facts:
1. Baylor is 3-0, and beat teams combined 1-11.
2. Baylor was 114th in def yards per play last year. No reason to think this defense is going to slow ISU down.
3. ISU has the best D in the big 12.
4. Folks saw Baylor move the ball last year and assume it will result in more points this year, even though ISU D is predicated on that. Make them move the ball without mistakes. Baylor made mistakes.
5. I like the over, but definitely have a wager on Iowa State -3. I agree with CW that this is a double digit win, unless BU gets a garbage TD.

Yes, Vegas wants to maximize profit and minimize risk. However, in the past 8 years in college football, road teams getting over 70% of the action, cover 44% of the time. I think ISU wins and I hope this is one of the 44% games.
How many of those teams getting 70% of the money won straight up?

This is how I have overcome the knowing when to quit issue. Open a new bank account and put $500 or whatever you can afford to lose into it. Then create a standard bet let’s say $11 ( to win $10). Decide how much action you want, let’s say 10 plays on college and 10 on Pro per week. Resist any urge to up your standard bet limit but if you feel strongly about a play you could decide to make 2 or more of your 10 plays on one game.

You need to be right 55% of the time in order to be a winner. If you’re only right 51% of the time the drag from the house will eventually diminish your stake. So if you use 3 of your plays on one game you will either be 30% right or 30% wrong. So I usually resist the urge to bet more than 20% of my plays on one game.

Most importantly, if your balance goes to zero close the account and try again next year or at least wait until basketball.

And remember to have fun!

Man, **** that noise! @cyrocksmypants and I will put out a weekly mailbag column going forward. I'll post a thread for questions on Monday.

**** yeah, I’m on board.
First question.

Is drinking Jameson, while working from home at 10:30 on a Friday and listening to Bill Whithers while wearing a pair of scrubs you stole from the hospital while you were in for emergency surgery the coolest or most pathetic thing ever? There's too much conflicting information!

Well then I better get them in early.

Have you found any decent sour beers in NOVA or are the Twin Cities still the king of those?

Also, I don't totally get the sour beer thing. I want to like them but I usually end up thinking, "That tastes sort of like fermented cat piss."

He is like Kene, but can throw the ball. Not sure he could handle more than 10 carries a game. Just need to find a 15-20 carry a game guy, someone you can depend on for 3rd and 2 or to run the draw on 3rd and 11 and have a chance to do something.
I was very impressed with option #5 in the running game. But he was running against the backup defenders.
