Hoiberg to Huskers

Unfortunately this will have an impact on local recruiting for us, however Prohm has had some success in areas like Chicago so that may lessen the impact.
I think we can honestly tell recruits "Fred's a great guy, but how long do you really think he'll stay". I suppose that doesn't work on 1 and done's, but it may factor in with others.

I hope he crashes and burns. I'm an ISU fan, not a fred fan, and a strong Nebby bball program can't be a good thing for us.

Plus, he used his alma mater for a stepping stone. We gave him a shot that nobody else would have, and he bailed for the first opportunity that came along. And we got fed a line of BS about hating recruiting on the way out. Why not follow that up with taking a job at a rival school that is one of the toughest recruiting jobs in the P5. If this deal goes through the Mayor title is dead to me, and his legacy will never be the same in my eyes.

It'd be interesting how this plays out. With Hoiberg potentially going to Nebraska, his name recognition would instantly elevate Nebraska's recruiting. I don't think that name recognition would elevate to the level of ISU, but it will increase. With that said, it may force some Iowa athletes to take a second look at playing at Nebraska. If after two or three seasons and Nebraska is winning, ISU could be fighting over the same recruits.

I'd prefer that Hoiberg choose a school that is not in the Western part of the Midwest.

He'll be recruited against just the same as he was here. When will he make the jump (back) to the NBA. I'm not going to pretend that I'm happy for Fred because I'm not. Now, if he would have taken a job outside of the midwest, it would be more of a meh type of thing.

Well they do have a bigger arena, which is nice.

Sure but one of the worst p5 teams in the history of cbb sells out a huge arena every night is pretty impressive. their % of tickets sold is more or less equal to Hilton. Even more impressive, they get 16,17k a night in Omaha for the Creighton games as well. Husker football fans love cbb so much they fill 2 big arenas.

It’s hard for me to have contempt for a grown man making his own decisions, but I agree with your sentiment on the ‘Mayor’ tag.

Maybe now we can stop with the Fred hero worship and the “Dreamy” stuff?

Who knows... Maybe during his time at nebby he will learn security is nicer than chasing dreams. Maybe Chicago left a bad taste.

Appreciate the honesty. I will have a hard time with the Mayor of Ames living and coaching in Lincoln.

A certain recruit in the city of Ames, that grew up watching Hoiberg's teams, comes to mind...

Edit: at least I assume he did

You may very well be right. Who knows. I'm just glad that uncertainty no longer exists within our basketball program anymore.

That recruit just doesn’t exist in my mind in Iowa. Look at history. Raef, Collison, Hinrich, Barnes all to blue bloods. Carton now to OSU. Foster is a double edged sword because if he gets a big offer he’s probably gone and if he doesn’t get that big offer he’s probably not everything he’s been built up as.

Weiskamp went to Iowa but he was a top 60 guy not a top 25 5 star type kid.

There just aren’t many of those mid level definitive P5, not quite blue blood level guys that come out of Iowa to fight over.

Guards/no position guys in the Midwest? Nebby will now be a player and there will probably be some recruiting overlap there but there’s recruiting overlap with every big school in the area for those kids so nothing changes there.

Every time Milwaukee, MN, Detroit, Cleveland, OKC, Memphis, Indiana, Denver, “midwestish” NBA jobs come open in the NBA he’s going to be mentioned as long as he doesn’t flop hard at Nebby.

I understand this. I don't agree with this.

Counter-narrative for the thought-driven (read: not emotion-driven, crazed fanaticism) man:
He is a grown man making financial decisions for his family. He was open with JP from the beginning about his desire to be an NBA coach. He left for a situation reuniting him with a connection - Gar Forman (who ironically was the reason Fred was fired). He didn't feed a line about recruiting - he hated it and still does, and will hire a staff that does a lot of heavy lifting for him there. Why not go somewhere that has great facilities, B1G dollars, midwest roots, low expectations, and great fan support? And Fred doesn't give a flying f**k about what you think about his legacy.

So just because Foster doesn't get a blue blood offer, Iowa St wouldn't want him? Don't agree with that.

And I would take a Weiskamp just about any year.

I dont doubt he grew up being aware of Fred but wouldn't Fred have been the coach when he was like ages 6-11 or something? I would think he's much more aware of Prohms teams. Fred impressing him would be mostly by name, what he's heard about him.

Well now I hope Fred comes across a situation where @aeroclone thoughts about his legacy have a significant impact in his life.

To an extent, but I don't think as much as ISU fans think. Kids he's going to start recruiting were like 12 when ISU had it's last win in the NCAA tournament under Fred. And the NBA stepping stone negative recruiting is going to be heavy. Not sure if there is enough to say he can recruit well without Otz. I think he'll recruit well and have success. But at the same time, if he has NBA aspirations again, he'll face the same recruiting problems as he did here, and he'll be gone quickly. If he doesn't have that NBA carrot, how hard is he going to grind? Of course assistants do lots of the heavy lifting in recruiting, but to get good talent to Nebraska, the head coach has to play a big role.
