Whoops I screwed up a little when I double checked. Wisconsin was the only one who listed it by semester when the other schools will talk about what a full year of tuition costs. So that adds another 5K to the cost and makes Iowa cheaper for instate compared to Wisconsin. Wisconsin does give MN residents a discount to make it about equal to instate MN now. Iowa would be the more expensive state of the three for MN residents.
Generally, this is not correct. One way that this could be correct would be if the student qualified for the highest out-of-state merit based scholarship at ISU ($8000) but did not qualify for an equivalent in-state one at UMN. That would make next year's costs at ISU about $660 less than at UMN. There could be other factors involved. If your former co-worker was an ISU alumnus, there would be an additional $1500 per year.
Looking at the financial aid packages we received, ISU would cost an average of about $6000 more per year than UMN. My daughter is probably going to end up going to Drake. The package she received would end up costing less than ISU and would be competitive with UMN.
Room, board and tuition at ISU was $490 a quarter when I started. So, $1500 a year.

The Carlson School of Management has almost ridiculously tough standards for admission. It's a really big deal to get admitted.
My daughter received her first rejection letter. She was not admitted to Northwestern. I can't even imagine what your qualifications would need to look like to get into Northwestern. I suppose a $500,000 payment to the foundation would probably have helped.
Thought it was something like Hamlin or such. It may have also been a buddy he was talking to. Said he would need around a 3.7 to get into whatever it was.
Northwestern was the school that my son was going to play for.
I smile and you probably know why. People were fairly impressed when he said where he was going.

Yeah, but you 2 had to dodge the dinosaurs between classes....
UW doesn't seem too bad in-state. It's less than UMN but more than ISU or Iowa and significantly less than Illinois (these are all based on in-state costs).
I think it was a knight helmet from the crusades.
