I thought I heard yesterday that no defending national champion (Villanova) has made it past the Sweet 16 the year after they won the title. But I might be wrong.
Florida won it back to back in 06-07.
Duke went back to back in 91-92.
UCLA went back to back to back to back to back etc....
That's what I thought, but I heard some radio pundit have some stat like that. Maybe it was that it hasn't happened in over a decade.
I like to do this, but with a weird system I came up with like 15 years ago. Basically, in the first round this is the number needed for that seed to win:
16: 100
15: 96-100
14: 86-100
13: 81-100
12: 67-100
11: 61-100
10: 56-100
9: 51-100
Then from the second round on the worse seeded team needs 67-100 to advance, unless they are a 13-16 seed, in which case they need the same number from the first round (example: 86-100 for a 14 seed). If the same seeds face off it's just a 50/50 shot.
It's not perfect, mainly because it produces too many 8/9 over 1 upsets (there's only a 20% chance that all the 1 seeds advance to the sweet 16 with this system) and it's not really fair for 1 seeds to have a 67% chance of beating a 2 seed, or same for 3 over 2, but it's a good balance between realistic and not too much work.
The one I did for this year produced a final four of: (4) Virginia Tech vs (3) Texas Tech and (2) Tennessee vs (1) North Carolina. Tennessee beat Texas Tech for the title.
Seems like a decent place to put this: one of our hs teachers did a "stock market" pool for the NCAAs.
Buy as many shares in as many teams as you like:
1-4 seeds cost $1
5-12 seeds cost $0.25
13+ seeds cost $0.10
Then the money is pooled and paid out for FF teams - 10% for making it, 30% for runner up, 50% for the winner. And the money is then split equally among shares. So the less shares purchased, the higher the payout per share.
So it was possible to hit a home run with a Loyola, but the best value were usually the top seeds that no one else wanted. Sometimes the most popular seeds would pay back less than they cost.
It was an interesting way to go about it, unique.

Every year I make a Big 12 Bracket. I have ISU vs. K-state in the final four and beating Texas Tech in the championship
I have been an 11 seed who wins the play in game will win their first round game, guy. But, I am having trouble this year picking against Maryland and Buffalo.
The posts in this thread helped me to have the winning bracket in both of my groups this year, including having 3/4 in the Final Four (Texas Tech, who knew?). No one can catch up at this point. Good on ya, fellow Fanatics! How's everyone else fairing?
I also picked 3/4 of the final four - the one I missed was Auburn - I had ISU there of course. I had ISU beating MSU in the final. If only....

I basically have the pool I'm in for work sealed up. If MSU or Virginia win, I win the pot. Auburn or TT I get second.
