Iowa State vs. Oklahoma Post-Game Thread

Yes, it was not very full at all. The entire east side student section upper deck had about 20 people in it. I'd guess ~10,000 actual attendance.

And it was kinda dead. Lots walked in late - I parked at 6:55pm, and walked in at the 13:30 mark - and lots were behind me. And it took us a good 1 minutes to warm up and cheer after that.

The roads/streets in Ames were a mess. University Blvd, Duff, S 4th were all slick as hell.

He can coach, but I still get frustrated with how timeouts are used. Talk with assistant coaches for a minute, talk to players for 30 seconds, and go sit on the bench while the on the floor team talks to each other, or refs, or whoever else is out there. I can understand knowing that these guys need to figure it out for themselves, but of the great coaches out there not too many share this style.

I thought timeout usage in the OU game was superb. The only issue I've had with timeouts in the past is that a lot of times they're after made shots and can be momentum killers. But that did not occur in the OU game, from my recollection.

is OU a NCAA team, really?? They are 5-10 in conference, and 17-11 overall. With trips to KU and KSU remaining. And I didn't see any shiny non-con wins.

Their metrics look good, and bracketologists have them in as like a 9-10 seed. But I don't get it, I guess, that record just screams NIT, esp if they end up 6-12 in conference.

I'd put OU closer to bubble-edge than the current bracket assessment, but the 5-10 Big 12 record isn't the full picture. Not a lot of major wins: Wofford (much better than it appeared at the time), Florida (win looks better now), sweep of TCU; Texas. Only one loss to a non-tournament team, at West Virginia.

A less-obvious element to Oklahoma's resume is the schedule. Here are OU’s true-road/neutral games:

Only two of those teams are in line for an at-large bid, and several were in Oklahoma or Texas, so they're fringe-neutral. But I doubt any P5 school has scheduled that many non-home games in 2018-19.

I was there. Post game on the drive home, Walters was ready to go to commercial and Prohm stopped him and talked about the crowd. He heaped praise for minutes and talked about the weather.
Then he talked about how after the game he told all of the players how lucky they are to play in front of a crowd like that on a day like yesterday. He further went into detail about the record this year. Then he talked about how the crowd was cheering like crazy when it was a tie game in the first half when we were diving for balls.

Steve literally stopped a commercial break to go beyond necessary with compliments.

He ALWAYS does this. He does it after Kansas. He does it after half-full, friday night games against Podunk Tech. It's a combination of saying thanks, trying to keep us fans all motivated to make noise, selling the Hilton magic brand, and generally keeping ticket-buyers feeling like they are part of the family.

None of this is bad, of course, it's smart. But don't take CSP's comments to mean this was anything like an amazing crowd tonight, in either quantity or quality. To be clear, I mean that in terms of HILTON crowds -- last night was still above average for most P5 teams. And I'd agree with him, the players are fortunate to have this kind of environment, when it's freezing and blizzardy on a monday night.

He did. The regular people crowd was great. The students are just so disappointing.

Steve also was rather passionate in his press conference about how he doesn’t think the players have anything to be embarrassed about regarding the home losses. He was sticking up for his guys.

OU is living off their good Non-Con, they were ranked heading into the conference season after all. The Sooners have been trending down ever since then but, due to the strenght of the B12 the metrics are negatively move them too much. Add in poor other teams especially in Pac 10, Big East, AAC and MW limiting at large bids the bubble is weak.
In the end it is last night was Quad 2 win for ISU and it will be that when the committee meets and thus is a good win to have on the record (especially winning by 17).

Second half I feel us exploding from 3 to get a large lead caused them to rush their shot selection and those tough/contested shots weren't falling.

Those missed shots got in their head like it did with us against TCU in Hilton and it affected their overall play.

I still don't know what to expect from this team and the season is almost over.

I know how his post game interviews go. I usually miss about 1 game a year and weather doesn't stop me from going, so I catch literally all of them.
Last night was unique in his praise. He went beyond what I've ever heard him say.

So? He gets his point across and then let's the players go talk with themselves. No need to keep them in the huddle if you've gotten your points across.

Quite possibly, but I would love to look at the stats of the first play after a timeout for us vs our opponents. I can really only think of 1 really good possession out of a timeout for us last night. They were switching the screens, and we got their PG on Talen down low. (foul on PG). We followed it up with a high ball screen to get Talen going downhill against their bigs. (Really, in my opinion what kept us in the first half of that ball game.) So Prohm, no doubt, coaches up in this time frame, but I have yet to see consistent results from timeouts across the season.
