With the start of training camps in the NFL, I thought we could use a place to add comments and info about how our guys - especially the undrafted free agents - are faring. I'm hoping some at least make practice squads and work their way onto active rosters in the coming year. These are the ones that I know of that had invites to rookie mini-camps:

Allen Lazard - Jacksonsville
Joel Lanning - Dallas
Jake Campos - Dallas
Marchie Murdock - Dallas
Mackenro Alexander - Washington
Colin Downing - Kansas City
Kamari Cotton-Moya - Oakland? Washington

Does anyone have updated info on these guys? Any others?

This write-up says that Lazard has to beat out 3 more experienced receivers for the 6th receiver spot and that his best hope is to demonstrate his ability to catch balls in the red zone using his size:

I fear it will be tough for Lazard to make that roster with the Jags WR core... Hopefully if he does get cut, he can land on his feet elsewhere.

If we say each team has 6 WR's on their roster, that is 192 guys throughout the league. He's better than that 192nd guy, for sure.

Maybe Lanning and Lazard will land on a practice squad for the year and do a parallel of Monte and Georges -- improve their conditioning and craft and then make the big club.

Yeah, I for sure don't see him landing outside someones practice squad

I follow the Cowboys, so I have kept track of Campos, Murdock, and Lanning's progress across their press/blogs/etc during the off-season, rookie orientation and OTAs. Lanning was featured a few times and is generally thought to be a dark-horse to make the team, especially if he can excel at special teams. He seems to be getting extra looks because of his versatility (if I remember correctly, they even had him try some long snapping). Never a bad deal if you can keep a linebacker that plays special teams and can also serve as an emergency QB, FB, and long-snapper. Murdock has been mentioned a couple of times in passing. Nothing bad to say about him, but it will be a long climb to supplant all of the experienced receivers the Cowboys have. Haven't heard Campos's name once.

Here is what Murdock is up against in Dallas at the WR position. Assuming that Dallas keeps 6 wideouts (probably 7 if you count Tavon Austin as a WR/RB) on the 53 man roster, here are the early leaders to make the team:
  1. Terrance Williams - 6th year. Had 230 catches for the Cowboys the past 5 years.
  2. Cole Beasley - 7th year. Had 254 catches for the Cowboys the past 6 years.
  3. Allen Hurns - 5th year FA. Had 189 catches for the Jags the last 4 years.
  4. Tavon Austin - 1st round pick in 2013. Had 194 catches for the Rams the past 5 years.
That means the final 2 or 3 come from this group:
  • Deonte Thompson - 6th year. Signed as FA. Had 27 catches for the Bills last year.
  • Michael Gallup - 3rd round pick in 2018. Training camp has been up & down.
  • Noah Brown - 2nd year. 7th round pick in 2017. Active in 13 games last year. 4 catches.
  • Lance Lenoir - Practice squad player last year. Active in 1 game and had 1 catch in 2017.
  • Mekale McKay - FA. Undrafted in 2017
  • KD Cannon - FA. Undrafted in 2017 out of Baylor
  • Marchie Murdock - FA. Undrafted in 2018
  • Cedrick Wilson - 6th round pick in 2018. Injured shoulder. Out for at least 4 months.
  • Malik Earl - FA. Undrafted in 2018. Waived in late May.

I'm not sure if it opens a door for Jeremiah George, but the Colts' starting MLB is expected to miss 3-4 weeks with a hamstring strain. I've been following their camp news and I haven't heard much from him but I figure those reps will now go to him or Skai Moore.

As I did yesterday for Marchie Murdock, here is the current roster analysis for the Dallas Cowboys linebacker group in training camp. Likely locks to make the team:
  1. Sean Lee - 9th year. 2nd round pick in 2010. Cowboys captain the last 3 years.
  2. Jaylon Smith - 2nd year. 2nd round pick in 2016. Started 6 games in '17.
  3. Joe Thomas - 5th year. Had 110 tackles and an INT for the Packers the past 2 years.
  4. Leighton Vander Esch - 2018 1st round pick out of Boise State
Assuming the Cowboys keep 7 linebackers on the 53 man roster the last 3 will come from:
  • Damien Wilson - 4th year. Part-time starter in '17; battling off-season issues, arrest
  • Justin March-Lillard - 3rd year. Played 1 game for DAL in '17; 5 games for KC in '16
  • Eric Pinkins - 3rd year. Played 6 games for SEA in '15; 5 games for NYG in '16
  • Tre'von Johnson - Undrafted in 2017. On Cowboys practice squad last year.
  • Chris Covington - 6th round pick in 2018. DPoY at Indiana.
  • Joel Lannning - Undrafted in 2018.
  • Kyle Queiro - Undrafted in 2018. College safety moved to LB in training camp
  • Ed Shockley - Undrafted in 2018. All-Conf at Villanova. Released in June.

I've read in a number of places that the Jags' top 5 receivers seem to be set and that the others in camp are battling for the 6th and, possibly, 7th slot. This writer seems to think that the 6th spot is trending toward Rashad Greene, which doesn't bode well for Lazard:

Rashad Greene the early favorite for the WR6 position
With five receivers all but assured to make the roster, the battle for the last two spots will be an interesting one to monitor as training camp progresses. Rashad Greene, Shane Wynn, Allen Lazard, and Jaydon Mickens are collectively battling for two spots — assuming the team carries six receivers.

With Dede showing flashes through the end of last season and being a recent draft pick, it would seem that the roster battle is between the remaining receivers for the final spot. Early on, it was thought that Rashad was on the outside looking in due to his wiry frame and injury issues.

However, the team is reportedly high on him and he had an impressive showing today. Greene has been producing throughout camp — with another highlight catch today — and has the ability to return punts.

With Sean Lee's history of injury I would bet on them keeping a LB with Mike experience on the practice squad.
