***Official FIFA World Cup 2018 Thread***

I'm not a soccer hater and I enjoy the World Cup, but why the heck do they pronounce teams like "Colombia are" or "England have"? It sounds so unnatural and it pisses me off

That's the Queen's English, as opposed to American English. England is considered a collective noun like "they" or "them". Thus "they are" is the same as "Columbia are".

Two countries separated by a common language.

England all the way to the finals

My business partner was born in England, but moved here at age 10. Big fan, he was glued to it all day. Happy for him, but he is tortured. He wants to believe they can make it to the finals, but also thinks they will lose 3-0 to Sweden.

England fans have a fair amount in common with ISU fans. Have seen a lot of defeat snatched from the jaws of victory. They live that paradox of expecting to lose, but still talk themselves into hopes of great success. Tortured.

England winning on PKs is equivalent to ISU winning a game because the Big12 refs screwed over the opponent. It's just not something that the universe even contemplates occurring.

Perhaps I’m showing my ignorance, but I find Pro/Rel to be one of the most overrated concepts in sports. Take EPL, for example. Usually it’s the same 6 teams at the top (Manchester City, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal), Everton, Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Leicester City, and West Ham United are usually good enough to rarely sweat relegation but (excluding Leicester City’s magical year) never really compete for the top of the standings, and the rest of the teams are really just playing to not be relegated. How does pro/rel really help? IMO it doesn’t - the top and middle of the league just get a fresh batch of bad teams to beat up on every year.

The three bolded clubs above have all either been relegated or flirted with relegation within the past 5 years. And Leicester only got promoted about 5 years ago.

France punched their ticket with a nice showing this morning.

Belgium facing Brazil now in one of my more anticipated match-ups in this round.
