What I would hate is another Fred Hoiberg situation. Where simply talk of the coach leaving kills recruiting. That said, not sure how a coach should handle a situation like that.
Well, it can't be any worse than how Hoiberg handled it.

The typical way is to publicly adamantly deny, and often have a contract guised as a hurdle to leaving. Fred on the other hand was closer to stating the rumors were true and his contract made it obvious with no room for plausible deniability.

I refuse to worry about this issue until Iowa State loses a coach who is firmly entrenched in the culture here and has a 5-19 record...

A quote from Campbell when he was hired.

“This place is special. I’m as loyal as you’re going to get,” Campbell said. “I really believe that the building process in taking something and making it special is what I love to do. That’s not a short-term fix. You’re not going to see a short-term fix by me or my staff. I’m here for the long haul … quite honestly, I look forward to raising my family here in Ames.”

Maybe typical coachspeak. Hopefully not.

Not to be a downer, but he probably said the bolded part above when he arrived at Toledo too. And he'll probably say it at his next job too. That's what head coaches do these days.

But of course every fan base feels their coach is different, and they actually mean it when they say it.

When a bigger name school hires somebody, they have to be able to sell it to their fans. Look how poorly Chizik was received at Auburn because of a lack of proven progress.

It would probably take a good 8 win season at ISU for that to be an easy sell to the fans at a new destination, or 3-4 years of 6 and 7 wins.

I want CMC to be incredibly successful here and for a very long time but let’s not pretend a big program won’t be looking for a bit more progress and consistency before taking a look at him.

Give him a good 500k raise to base salary if we win 6 or 7 this year, extend for 2-3 years and increase the buyout a lot. We could realistically increase his salary 4x if we wanted but then future increases become harder and less room for assistant salaries.

I was listening to the Game Broadcast on Saturday and JW had Jamie Pollard on during the rain delay.

JP said something to the effect of it's nice to have a coach that people want as opposed to a coach nobody else wants. And he also referred to how it'd be "pretty expensive" for someone else to get Campbell right now.

There are 130 FBS teams. 77 have coaches that have been at their program less than 4 years. Only 12 FBS teams have a coach they've had more than 10 years. It's a merry-go-round. Let yourself enjoy the time he's here without worrying about when he's going to leave. He's won 7 games so far as our head coach!!!

And LOL at those who think Ohio State's hiring him any time soon. If he rips off a couple conference championships or at least plays in the conference championship game a couple times, they may have him on a list. You do know who they can hire if they want to, right? The list is almost unlimited.

C'mon people, just relax.

It's been 40 years since we had a coach hired away because of his success at Iowa State (and, no, I do not count that weird situation with Chiz). And then it was some real recognized success. Hell, Majors and Bruce won the Big 8 COY three times in the 1970's and were here five years and six years. If we are fortunate to get to 6-6, no big ass name school is going to come calling.
36-24-36? Ha ha, only if they're 5'3"

I dont want to get the cart in front of the horse here...but after reading about how much of a dumpster fire KU football is, it just goes to show you how bad things can be, and how lucky we are for CMC. HYPOTHETICALLY, we go to a bowl game this year. Will other programs come calling? And if they do, can we keep him? Id be willing to pay mid to top dollar for him. His staff is solid, he can recruit well, and people are really excited about ISU football. I think if he stays we are consistently in the top of the Big 12 in the next 3 years.

For me, the fact that he (and his wife) chose to build a house instead of buying (per Charter in a FAWCast) is a pretty compelling reason to believe what he said. But things change quickly in this world, just ask the last staff.

If we get to 6 or 7 wins I agree to the raise and buyout suggestions, but we don't need extensions at this point.

It’s an unfortunate need in order to get any coach to agree to a smaller salary or high buyout for longer term interests. If we expect an up and coming coach to be in it for the long term, we
have to show we are equally as interested in rewarding him.

Assistants might move on. For once it would be nice to have an equally good (or better) replacement for a good assistant that's moving on.

Bold statement Cotton. Forgot why we all make up names and discuss things on a forum pertaining to a common interest. What sort of Earth moving conversation can you come up with? I'm all ears.
