Does anyone know the most medals ever received throughout an olympians career? If so, how close is Phelps and/or how many does he need to break it?

When I think of swimming experts, for some reason, Michael 'Wilbuahn' (doesn't look right, but I don't know any better spelling!) isn't exactly the first guy that comes to mind...
Ok, so they just said tied for most career medals (9), so I don't know for sure if that is gold, or total. I swear I heard gold earlier.
Okay, just double checked and he is tied for most GOLDs in a career at 9. No clue about total medals.
I thought they also said gold, but i could be wrong...thanks for the input tho!
Overall individual medal count, entering 2008 games:
18 - Larisa Latynina, Soviet Union (gymnastics, 1956-60-64)
15 - Nikolay Andrianov, Soviet Union (gymnastics, 1972-76-80)
13 - Edoardo Mangiarotti, Italy (fencing, 1936-48-52-56-60)

Phelps now has 11 (9 gold, 2 bronze) with five more events left. He'll need to swim in London to break the record.
wow I can't believe he's that close already. Hopefully he shatters that record throughout his career which would be pretty awesome. Thanks for the update as well!
Jenny Beth Thompson (USA 92-96-00-04) holds the overall swimming record with 12 medals. She won 8 golds in relay, but none individually.

9 is the gold medals in swimming I believe...10 is gold medals from all events.
Nope, 9's the most gold medals across all events Winter and Summer, held by 5 people including Phelps.
USA is just performing stellar in team gymnastics right now! Paul Horton is dominating his routines! I think that is his name
