8-11-08 Olympics Discussion Thread

Regarding the 4X100 relay, lots more went down with that race, than just the world record in the relay:

Phelps swam the lead-off leg for the Americans. He swam 47.51. The world record, going into the race: 47.50, by France's Alain Bernard, lining up Sunday to swim the French anchor leg in the relay.

Phelps and the Americans swam Sunday in Lane 4, the French in 5, the Australians in 3.

To Phelps' left, in Lane 3, Eamon Sullivan of Australia pulled lead-off duty as well. He touched ahead of Phelps, in 47.24 -- a world record in the 100m (lead-off legs are eligible for national and world records).

Phelps' mark is now the American record. His prior personal best had been 47.92, at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials.

The fastest Olympic lead-off split before Sunday: South Africa's Roland Schoeman, with a 48.17 in 2004.

If swimming translates into numbers, it also is about so much more.

Great read, and still gets me going. I was yelling at the TV last night, and thought Lampley was gonna lose it on the air. He's used to golf broadcasts and boxing.

Simply an awesome race, and one that will be hard to top. But it sucked me into watching the olympics for the next 2 weeks. What will I miss if I don't? Shawn Johnson's next performance is sure to be memorable, and the "Redeem Team" will be making mincemeat of the competition, after the world questioned the US basketball teams honor after the last olympics.

I don't want to be the spelling police, but this is for the people who might be looking for more information on the coach making the comments:

Bela Karolyi
Ignore the other jokers; I appreciate the spelling correction. Thanks!

Also, it is very difficult for announcers to make badminton sound exciting, even at the Olympic level...

I beleive that Marta is the head coach and Bella now runs USA Gymnastics. If Lyukin's score was 9.975 then Shawns should have definately been higher. Bella was astonished that two judges gave it an 8.8, called them outright cheaters.

Bela knows what he's doing. Calling the judges out now will put them on notice for more fair scoring when it matters.

The judges weren't smart enough to wait until the finals to start screwing. My guess and hope is that we'll see more balanced scoring when it really matters - thanks in large part to Bela's rave.

Fixed the spelling!

I think that was Danny Hicks on the call...and I love his comment afterwards, "Who's talkin' now???"

I would have loved to hear his golf broadcast partner Johnny Miller talkin' trash against the French afterwards...

One really cool thing if you have DirecTV HD is if you are on any of the Olympic coverage stations (excluding NBC itself), you can press the red button on your remote and it will display a menu with all of the scheduled events (including those on NBC). Pretty neat feature.

Are Todd and Phil still going in vball? I saw them get upset over the weekend.

I really enjoyed watching the swimming last night especially the fact that it was live.

With the internet, radio, TV, etc, its nearly impossible to avoid finding out the results before the event is shown on TV.

I was watching some of the womens gymnastics last night and it seemed to me that the U.S. scores were awful low for some very nice routines. I saw 9.1s and 8.9s. Usually you don't see those unless they fall off the apparatus or in the case of a floor exercise just plain fall down.

Is it just me or does it sound like the announcers are making this the USA vs. China Olympics.

The announcers aren't "making" this the USA v. China Olympics - it was that way to begin with. Just look at the sheer # of athletes and the medal count so far - it's us versus them...

Todd and Phil looked good today, Phil back to ripping some serious balls with amazing trajectory! T-rog was scooping balls and swung well, at least I thought. He also acknowledged that he needed to be more helpful to Phil when the thin beast is struggling, that loss may have been the best push for them!

I think the scores have been lower ever since they changed the numbering system.

That being said, I told my wife before the Olympics began that Shawn Johnson probably picked a bad year to go to the Olympics. China is our closest competitor in gymnastics, and they've been itching to win this event for the last couple of games. Having a subjective competition in their own home country means that I think we'll have to be head and shoulders better to actually win the gold.

Judging by last night, I don't think that's going to happen.

So for gymnastics, is it still the same basic scoring system and then they add in the difficulty?

Yeah. There's a "difficulty" score based on the elements in the routine, and then the "execution" score.

15.0 is now about the bottom acceptable score. The best score possible would be around 17.2, I think. I've only seen a handful of routines that had a 7.0 difficulty rating, and one 7.2.
