The Jack

Just doing some rudimentary investigation, I found a nice Holland paver (8"x4"x1.75") for $0.74 at Lowe's. It takes 4.5 units to cover a square foot, for a total of $3.33 per sq. ft. Now, obviously a distributor would get you a much better deal, but let's use those numbers for argument's sake.

How does that compare to the cost of asphalt at roughly the same thickness? Is it outrageously more? I have no idea, so I would appreciate any input.

We'll use that and the $100 asphalt that Jartec also quotes. For guesstimation and comparison's sake, lets say the concourse is 350 ft long by 50 ft wide. That puts us at a total of 17500 sq. ft. Using brick at $3.33/sq. ft equates to $58275. We'll say the contractor gets a discount and round down to and even $50000. For the same thickness asphalt (I'm assuming anything below the 1st 1.75 inches is the same, I doubt it is, but this is rough work), we're looking at just over 2500 cu. ft. (about 95 cu. yd.), so about $3150. Wow, that is pretty significant. (I had no clue when I started working this out)

That, and add in all the labor it takes to lay all those bricks down compared to say a 5 man crew running an asphalt paver that can do quite a few road miles per day...way cheaper that way.

Since I am a student and can't afford to donate large sums of money, yet, I would donate my labor. I will happily lay brick for Jack Trice Stadium to make it look better, for... hmmm.. $5/hour? I'm sure I can find some people to help also.

I'll do it on the weekends for free beer and a parking pass to BBALL games, those winter nights are freezing!!!

Hell, I'll do it for free, and for the reward of having a stadium that's not punched out of a cookie-cutter. Last I checked, our school colors weren't gray and off-white, so I'm all for the brickwork injecting a bit of 'Cyclone' into our concourses.

Those paver bricks often go on sale at Menards for 47 cents.

I have a feeling we're getting squeezed by union labor. Their contract probably only allows 12 bricks per worker to be laid in an 8 hour shift.

But here's a better idea for JP. He could SELL bricks with people's names or messages written on them. That way they could get the bricks AND raise money.

Current asphalt prices are running about $100-$110 per ton, and have been subject to pretty high inflation lately (as have most construction materials). So at 140 lbs/cu ft., 1 square foot of asphalt at 2 inches would cost $1.17/sq. ft.

I wish I had the money to ensure we were not taking a bunch of shortcuts in our renovations!

I was on a campus tour of Wake Forest earlier this summer and was blown away by the upgrade they have made to their football facilities. And I would say that Wake's FB history is weaker than ours with the exception of the very recent past.

This is why it is so critical for Chizik to have success and our FB program to be a big time income generating machine.

The attached link show a good shot of the before (top pic) and after (bottom pics) of Wake's stadium.

So did this upgrade increase the capacity of 31,500 - doesn't look like it. However the improvements look nice.

I wish they would of moved the suite wall out another two feet to conceal the steal supports. Then they should of built the wall all the way to the second deck, this would give the stadium a more enclosed look. ~if we had the money.

I'm sure it did somewhat but probably not too dramatically. Just like the renovations we are currently doing have not appreciably increase the size of our venue. You need to realize that Wake is a very small school...only about 4,000-5,000 students.

What struck me is that their "base stadium" is nearly identical to our "base stadium"...with the one exception being that theirs is only one level where ours is two levels. They also have an operations building at one end of the stadium just like we do. But again, I was blown away by how impressive their luxury box addition looks from both the outside (especially) and inside.

I will try to post a couple of pics I took.

QFT. That would have helped improve the feel of the Jack a lot; I wish we would have done it. I'm still hopeful that at some point in the future, we will move to a more classic brick facade for the entire stadium, instead of fruitlessly trying to continue the '1970 ultra-minimalist concrete' style.

The renovations are very impressive. They look timeless, not trendy.

The big reason for their improvements is that naming rights being sold. I love Jack Trice, Ive named my dog after him. But id be all for selling naming rights for 20 years and have it be Jack Trice Field again in exchange for more upgrades. Only if the upgrades were done right and not "Ferentz'd".

I absolutely cannot see the stadium name changing. "Big Sponsor Field at Jack Trice Stadium," maybe.

But here you have a stadium named for the first black player in the school's history, who died from injuries suffered in a game. After all of the time it took to get it named JTS, there's no way they give that up just for cash. Plus, you'd probably have guys like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton all over it.

You'd have the Iowa State student body all over it long before that circus comes to town.

Mark my words, the only reason that the naming rights have not been sold is that we haven't found a company willing to pay enough for them...and we probably won't until we have more success on the field which equates to more TV exposure. You all need to remember that EVERYTHING is for sale...at a price.

There are plenty of other ways to honor Jack Trice...heck, we did that while our Stadium was named Cyclone Stadium....which, by the way, is what it has been named for the majority of it's existance.

I remember a thread a couple of years ago with everyone cracking on Texas Tech for the company logos on their basketball floor. I also recall many saying that we would never do something that tacky. Well, look what appeared on the floor of Hilton last year...that's right, a company logo.

Big time college athletics are big business which means you need big money to compete...trust me, Pollard is pursuing every angle he can to raise athletic department revenues...including naming rights.

Agreed. With our funding lagging well behind our conference, I would raise hell if Pollard had a good offer on naming rights and didn't take it. Naming rights could pay for a lot of facilities improvements.
