Found out my niece got accepted into Virginia Tech's doctorate program for statistics. Full ride plus $1,700/month which I imagine is TA salary.
She taught high school math for a year after graduating last year. Loved teaching, hated the discipline problems.

As long as I'm at it, I might as well complain about all of the people dropping off their kids at my son's school who can't even stop surfing the phone while driving through a busy elementary school parking lot. I have no idea what they are thinking!
I was in a Hy Vee parking lot the other day. A woman walked out of the store with a toddler walking (staggering) along beside her. I stopped and gave them a lot of leeway. A car behind me decided to just zip around me and them. It should be legal to slash their tires.

My daughter has thankfully given up policing my speed. (my foot is made of a material that can be found between thallium and bismuth on the periodic table)

After constant badgering, I finally told her that if we would have left on time, daddy wouldn't have to speed.

The same argument should work with the wife, but, honestly, no argument works with the wife.
I got a few speeding tickets in my first 20 or so years of driving: in June of 1973 (right after graduating) and June of 1983 (traveling from SF to Washington for my 10 year reunion). You better believe I breathed a sigh of relief when June 1993 was over and no ticket was issued. I actually thought I had it made; that the every ten years curse was over. Nope. 4 in the afternoon on December 31st, driving the boys home from Ames. Cop couldn't understand why I was laughing so hard when he came to the window. Sucker issued the ticket anyway! December of 2002, I told PapaLew I was just going to go out onto I35 on Jan 1, and drive 100+ mph until I got the ticket...just to get it over with. ;) Actually didn't get it until fall 2003...October, I think. And that's the most recent ticket I've had.

Heading in to Ames on Saturday for the movies, we left late because he was in a Clash of Clans war. The only way I could get him out the door was to tell him that I would drive and he could finish his attack. Almost to Ames, I have the cruise on (so that I don't go 80), and we're talking and laughing about my leadfoot and who gets all the tickets, and I hear this "bloooooop" from behind me. Look in the mirror (I'm in the left lane passing another car) and there's an unmarked behind me with the inset red/blue lights flashing away. I'm like, oh ****...and I drop speed to move in behind the car I was passing. Cop goes flying past both of us and keeps going...but he pointed his finger at me as he went by. PapaLew was pissed as all get out because once again, I didn't get pulled over. Born lucky, I guess. :D

I've had other drivers do that to me when I'm stopped for pedestrians at a crosswalk. Ticks me off to no end...

Both kids have questioned a variety of avatars including mine and CG's (which they both find hilarious, BTW) on different occasions. He didn't have the chance on this occasion since I had to put him into protective custody as I mentioned before. Orangutans have ridiculous long arms so I had to get him away from the monitor double quick!

your kids sound quite intelligent and have an excellent sense of humor.

My dumb SIL claims she dated a cop at one time and he informed her that you don't have to stop for those stop signs in parking lots. So to this day she burns through stop signs in parking lots. I try to tell her that even if her cop friend was correct and legally they can't ticket you for not obeying the stop sign on private property, it isn't going to go well for her if she is sued for causing damage or injury when she blew through a stop sign.

I just pray that she doesn't some day hit someone.

Not true, but close. (Although I will slow greatly but roll through on my bike, but only if I am not disrupting anyone else by doing so.) I abhor those who blow through stop signs at full speed in my residential neighborhood where there are kids all over the place. Your time is not that important! And don't get me started on the "stop lights are optional for cyclists" crowd. I have had numerous near misses as a pedestrian when crossing with the light.

Also, I am glad that JC's youngun is keeping him honest in the roundabouts. Those things are much more efficient if people are signalling their intention when leaving so other drivers are aware when it is safe to enter. If used properly they are much more efficient and quicker than 4 way stops. I have one a block from my house and I swear I'm the only person who ever signals when leaving the thing.

Wow, that blew up to a rant...
Nope. My daughter does, too.

As much as I thought roundabouts were a waste of money when they started putting them in, I really appreciate them now. Way more efficient than a 4-way stop.

@wxman1 I've been in a similarly tough spot recently and had a sort of "come to Jesus" talk with who I would consider my mentor at work a couple weeks ago. It definitely helped clear some things up and help me see where things stand. Made it clear that I was not thrilled with where I was and wanted to move forward. So I've seen some positive changes so far but we'll see. Maybe you've already mentioned similar conversations but if you keep getting passed over after having those types of chats.......I'd at least be looking around.

I have a prescheduled meeting with my boss this afternoon that I plan to somewhat lay out that I don't want to leave and I am not at that point yet but if I am not going to wait around forever.

I don't think those stop signs have any legal bearing but if there is a pedestrian in a parking lot they have the right of way and people need to grant that. People drive through parking lots as if they are on the interstate.

The people walking need to be alert as well, though, and not nose first in their phones. I drive a regular sized car. More than 50% of the vehicles around here are pickups, vans & SUVs. When I'm backing out of a parking space, I can't see what's coming from either side until I'm at least 1/3 of the way out. I'm backing slowly to give other cars a chance to notice me. I can't tell you how many times people have stepped directly into my path while I'm moving, and have been angry at ME for having to stop abruptly to avoid hitting them. What part of "YOU CAN SEE ME, BUT I CAN'T SEE YOU" doesn't resonate with these bozos?

Driving there tomorrow. I will likely perish from the boredom and general small town vibe that is actually toxic to my system.

Enjoy the advantages. Everyone here was fishing this morning. I guess maybe a few of the cars on the shoulder still might be finding morels. Or go birding. Or actually see stars at night instead of lights.

We have the manual from the DOT (which is now just basically a paper pamphlet). You can download an app to take practice tests. You have to have your permit for 6month before you can get your school permit, so November old be the earliest she could get that. I don't remember having to wait 6mo, but we probably did? That was almost 30yrs ago.

I only school permitted the oldest one. After that I had a steady supply of 16+ year olds for awhile to help with the others. Then the struggle though is finding an appropriate vehicle for them without breaking the bank.

Congratulations! Sounds like a TA or RA stipend. Son's has gone up every year. Has paid off his undergrad loans while in grad school. He's only been on TA one semester and RA the rest, and was lucky that his TA semester, his prof was teaching a graduate class so he didn't have to deal with undergrads. Complained a lot about online students bugging him to spoon feed info to them though. Not sure if she will have the same problem as him being in physics, but he is the only US citizen grad student in his lab, and has gotten delayed on his thesis project to work on a defense project.

Several of my brothers were high school math teachers. They loved everything but the BS teacher meetings.

Good luck. My son kept applying at Rockwell and they would offer him different jobs than the ones he applied for. He really had no desire to code forever but that was what they wanted him to do. So hopefully they can give you a better fit for your interests.

An Irish beach at Dooagh on County Mayo's Achill Island reappeared last month after being washed away 33 years ago in a storm.

Isla Fisher looks sort of Irish. Did she make it reappear?

Speaking of stop signs, we have one, 4-way stop in my town. 30mph all directions. Semis use the road going N/S as a bypass for the toll on i90 once you cross into IL. You have to be careful when going through there because once in a while you'll get a semi that doesn't stop. My mom and her co-worker almost got hit by one a few weeks ago. I imagine it will only get worse as this will be the detour when they start tearing up 90. In town, the road is smooth, but outside of town, one of the worst roads in the state. They won't bother fixing it until after the whole interstate project is done in 6 years.

Speaking of traffic issues, I have a question for @VeloClone - Have you tried navigating from 252 onto 94 to get downtown lately? I'm pretty sure I ended up travelling through all 9 levels of Dante's Inferno getting through that and still ended up on the wrong road.

So I thought it would be cool to sign Z up for tumbling this summer.
Tried the Parks and Rec website. Everything is a wait list. Fine.
Clicked to join a wait list. As expected, site told me that I had to create an account. Cool.

Click the "create new account" button, get a screen that says new accounts cannot be created. Outstanding.
